Naomi Plummer Shaw

In Remembrance Of Dignity, elegance, courage, faith-filled, grace, patience and strength are all words that describe Naomi Plummer Shaw----a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, teacher, neighbor and friend. She was the wife of Walden M. Shaw and stood by his side through thick and thin. On July 11, 2018, Naomi rejoined Walden as she transitioned to her eternal reward. Naomi, affectionately known as Nay, began her life’s journey in Weldon, NC on July 7, 1924, the second of five children and the first daughter to George W. Plummer and India Pernell Buffaloe Plummer, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Archie Plummer of Weldon, NC, and sisters, Essie Mae Plummer Scott of Weldon, NC and Mary Plummer McEachin of Salisbury, MD. She inherited a rich legacy of faith, family, character, education, leadership and entrepreneurship. Despite their limited schooling, her parents placed a high value on education and made enormous sacrifices to ensure that Naomi and her siblings received the best possible education. Naomi received her early education from the Weldon City School System and proudly graduated with honors from North Carolina College, now North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Commercial Education. After graduation she returned to Weldon to teach typing and shorthand at Halifax County Training School before uniting in Holy Matrimony with Walden on August 17, 1952. They relocated to Norfolk, VA and their blessed union bore them two daughters, Carmel Cassandra and Zoe Monisa. Naomi continued to teach after relocating to Norfolk and retired from the Norfolk City School system. Naomi professed her love for Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Weldon, NC. She became of member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church after relocating to Norfolk, VA where she was involved in many ministries and dutifully served as an usher and sang in the adult choir. Lebanon Baptist Church in New Kent, VA became her home church in 2007 where she remained a member until her death. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading, music, entertaining, dancing, Pinochle, Croquet, and family trips. Celebrating her life and mourning their loss are her daughters Dr. Carmel Shaw Nieves (Antonio) of Cambridge, OH and Zoe Shaw Thompson and husband Phillip of Quinton, VA; four grandsons who were her “pride and joy” Miguel A. Nieves (Alison) of Philadelphia, PA, Ricardo L. Nieves of Columbus, OH, Ramon L. Nieves of Brooklyn, NY, and Brian E. Thompson (Natasha) of Austin, TX; two precious great-granddaughters, Darlatia Nieves of Philadelphia, PA and Kairi Nieves of Columbus, OH; one caring sister, Georgia Plummer Ward of Weldon, NC, two sister-in-laws, Nancy Plummer of Richmond, VA and Verona Shaw Williams of Plainfield, NJ. and one brother-in-law, Peter McEachin of Salisbury, MD. Naomi's spirit and memory will continue to live on in the hearts of a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
