Miriam Marlene Mason

Miriam Marlene Mason, the first-born child of William Edward Stokes and Miriam L. Burns Stokes, was born on September 26, 1939, in Baltimore, Maryland. Marlene was peacefully called to be with the Lord suddenly on September 25, 2004, one day before her 65th birthday.At an early age, Marlene accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She attended, was baptized and became a member of Faith Baptist Church as a young girl. There she sang on Simon Williamson Memorial Choir.Marlene received her early education in the Baltimore City school system, graduating from Dunbar High School in 1957. She furthered her education at Coppin State University and Sojourner Douglass College.Marlene’s professional career included positions with General Motors, Continental Can, Westinghouse, and Bethlehem Steel. She was a hard-working woman. Her true love was working with people, thus she most enjoyed her job as a counselor at the Hickey School. The children affectionately called her Ms. M, and they loved her. She was a mother to all children, offering guidance and words of wisdom. Most recently she was caregiver to the elder, including her father.Marlene was a loving and devoted wife. On December 19, 1983, she married her childhood friend, Charles M. Mason, whom she’d known since kindergarten. Although they had no children of their own, they gave their time and love to raising a foster child, Latawsha Phillips, for several years. Charles also has two daughters that Marlene loved as her own, Rita and Kim. Marlene’s own child, Susan, preceded her in death, dying shortly after childbirth.Marlene was a fun-loving person. She loved to travel, and she made numerous friends wherever she went. She will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew her.Precious memories of life will be cherished by her loving husband, Charles; her three daughters, Rita Mason-Lucas, Kim Coleman, and Latawsha Phillips; her son-in-law, Ray Lucas; her four grandchildren, Dajanai Myers, Desiree Myers, Ryejae Myers, and Olivia Lucas; her mother, Miriam L. Stokes; her father, William E. Stokes; her sisters-in-law, Evelyn Stokes, Barbara Mason, Iola Gault; her brother-in-law, Daniel Gault; her niece, Miriam M. Stokes; her nephew, William M. Stokes, Jr.; her great-niece, Maurissa Stokes; her great-nephews, David Lindberg and Maurice Harris; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, six months ago, William M. Stokes, Sr., and her baby daughter, Susan Lucretia.
