Miller Stevenson

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be four score years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and we fly away.Psalm 90A Prayer of Moses the Man of GodGod in His infinite wisdom and love designed the universe and all that would abide in it. Only God determines the length of man’s days. In the Heavens, God designed a child and called his name MILLER. On December 23, 1911, God called forth the angels to declare the birth of a son to Willie and Camilla Stevenson. Only God would know the longevity of life that would be bestowed upon this man of God. The days of his years would be fourscore years and fifteen. On April 22, 2007, Miller made his peaceful flight back to the heavens to take his rest in the arms of his creator. Miller was born on a farm in Keysville, VA. He was the fifth of six children. He and his siblings were raised in a Christian home. His parents laid the foundation for a strong Christian life and Miller accepted Christ at an early age. He joined Antioch Baptist Church in Virginia. At the age of seventeen, Miller moved to Baltimore, Maryland and immediately sought a church home. He joined Enon Baptist Church and later joined Sharon Baptist Church. Miller enjoyed a good sermon and good gospel music. Miller’s parents recognized that in addition to a strong religious background, their son would need a good education. They made sure he received a good education in the Public School System in Charlotte County, VA. May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us- yes, establish the work of our hand.Psalm 90:17Miller was taught the importance of work. He believed in working hard and doing the best job you can. Miller was a dedicated and committed employee at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation as a Crane Operator. He was well liked and respected by all who had the pleasure of working with him. Miller retired in 1972 after 43 years of superior service. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.Ephesians 5:31On July 10, 1948, Miller married the love of his life, Mattie H. Chappell. They joined as one flesh and remained so for 58 wonderful years. His devotion and love for his wife is exceeded only by his love of the three children born to this union. Miller was the proud father of Arnold, Deborah and Dudley. All that he did, he did for his family. He left a strong legacy. He taught them to live a life of good character; to love family and friends; to have compassion for others; to live a life of integrity and great faith. Miller taught by example. Nothing made him beam more than to see his children pass his life’s lessons on to their children. Miller had a bounding love for all of his grandchildren and grieved the early death of his two grandsons, Earl and Tony Stevenson. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.Psalm 90:12Miller was a gentle giant and a leader in the eyes of his family. His home was a welcome haven to anyone in need. Miller was a man of few words; but the words he spoke were always loving and honest, while softened with a twist of good humor. He could always make you laugh no matter the situation. His humor and great faith were essential elements to his long healthy life. He refused to be a burden to his wife or children. He was very capable of caring for his needs, even preparing his daily breakfast. He took great pleasure reminding everyone that breakfast was the most important meal of the day! Miller enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening, attending auctions and visiting family. His favorite past time was sharing stories of his childhood on the farm with anyone who dropped by for a visit. …his eye was not dim nor his natural force abated.Deuteronomy 34:7We did not ask for it to be over, but then again, we did not ask for it to begin. Miller lived a wonderful life full of love and joy. He leaves to celebrate their memory: his beloved wife, Mattie H. Stevenson; devoted children, Arnold L. Stevenson (Yvette), Deborah S. Whitaker (Ryland, Sr. ) , and Dudley H. Stevenson, Sr.; loving grandchildren, Monica, Ryland, Jr., Aaron, Dudley, Jr. and Jayia; caring sister, Christine Robinson (Houston, Texas); dedicated brother- in- law, Freddie Chappell (Hortense); and a host of nieces, nephews , cousins and friends.
