Mildred Louise Raye

MILDRED LOUISE RAYE was born in Lafayette, Alabama on September 15, 1910. She was the second of five children that blessed the union of the late Lovenia Seroy and Pasco Hughley. Her siblings preceded her in death. She came to the end of her earthly journey on February 18, 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland after a lengthy illness.The family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee when Mildred was seven years of age and she received her education in the Chattanooga Public School System.At the age of thirteen Mildred accepted and confessed Christ as her Personal Saviour. She joined the Missionary Ridge Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She worked diligently with Baptist Young People Training Union (BYPTU) for many years. She later moved to Detroit, Michigan where she met and married the late William Raye. They were happily married for more than fifty years. There were no children born to this union.She joined the Greater New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan where she remained a member until her death. Mildred worked in the Detroit Public School System as a Teacher’s Aide.During her latter years, she moved from her home on Taylor Street to Virginia Park Meadows where she met and made many friends. They often gathered in her apartment and she entertained them with her culinary expertise. Mildred was as an excellent cook and no one could leave her apartment without a plate of food. She participated in the Tenant’s Council Meetings and took great joy in preparing the food, and coordinating the “kitchen” activities and decorations for the tenant meetings and other events for the residents.Mildred’s life touched all who knew her in a unique and special way. Her genuine love and compassion for people manifested itself in her unselfishness towards friends and strangers. She was a shining light for those of us left behind to reflect and remember this special lady. She will truly be missed.She leaves to cherish her loving memory: two sisters-in-law, Priscilla Francis Talliaferro and Katherine Haywood; brother-in-law, Robert L. Finley; two devoted friends, Emmaline Forrest and Audrey Copeland; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
