Mildred Harris

It is hard to realize the battle is through, and we must carry on without you. You finished your task the other day, folded your tent and drifted away.On Saturday, January 31, 2004 about 9:30 p.m., the death angel took the life of our beloved mother, Mrs. Mildred Harris at the Charles Village-Future Care Nursing Home.She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Lucy Stephen. She was born in Halifax County, Virginia on August 21, 1921. She joined the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church at an early age. She married her army sweetheart, the late George Moses Harris. To that union, three daughters were born.In 1952, the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where they joined Zion Baptist Church. She was a domestic worker until a surgery prevented her return to that profession. Nevertheless, her skills as a seamstress enabled her to provide necessities. Later in 1966, the Harris moved to Aisquith Street where she found a new church as much as possible even if she had to go alone. Never was she too tired to sew an outfit or bake and extra pie or bread for numerous anniversary programs. Every item she contributed to the church was in demand. Mom Mildred, as we all called her, had and extended family in St. John and the Community. She was a giver and had a huge heart for all mankinds. If she had a spare coat, dress or pan, you could have it. If you were sick, in pain, or hungry, she had the remedy. Most importantly, she loved and encouraged the whole family to forgive unites and get closer together. Every sister, bother, nephew or nieces has had some advice from this woman about family and life, because she lived it each day unconditionally.She leaves to mourn three daughters, Lucy Ann Harris, Juanita Davis of Baltimore, MD. and Dorothy Harris-Grant of Omaha, NE., six grandchildren, Kevin, Fedoria, Toi, Robin Genesis and Raphael; eight great-grandchildren, Kia, Kevin, Tadoria, Cierra, Donita, Tyasia, Diamond and Darwin; one great-great grandchild, Ja’Quan; one aunt, Ola Mae Brandon of Alton, VA., three sisters, Cora Mae Pointer, Viola Stovall and Elizabeth Stephens of South Boston, VA, a son-like nephew, Ezander Stephens, of South Boston, VA., a host of cousins, nephews and nieces, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and devote neighbor, Dora Davis.
