Mildred Abel

Mildred Marie Abel, born November 2, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, was peacefully called home to be with the Lord on May 28, 2025. The only child of Elsie and James Broxton, she was raised in Brownsville, where the values of love, service, and strength were instilled early. In the 1970s, she moved to Baltimore, where she cared for her parents and raised her children and grandchildren with unwavering devotion. Mildred attended Vassar College and devoted over 40 years to nursing, serving in New York and Baltimore at institutions including Sinai and Johns Hopkins. A gifted and compassionate caregiver, she left a lasting impression on patients and colleagues alike. A passionate advocate for justice, Mildred participated in the Civil Rights Movement and marched on Washington. As a member of the New York chapter of the Black Panther Party, she volunteered with the Free Breakfast program, ensuring children started their day nourished and cared for. In Baltimore, she continued this legacy, working with schools and nonprofits, earning the affectionate title “Grandma” from many whose lives she touched. Mildred was a devoted follower of Christ and a true fisher of men. In the 1980s, she became a cherished member of Huber Memorial Church, where she and her family worshiped faithfully each Sunday. Her faith was not only personal but deeply communal—she welcomed countless individuals into the congregation, guiding many to accept Christ into their lives. On any given Sunday, she could be found near the front of the sanctuary, tambourine in hand, lifting her voice and spirit in praise— always making a joyful noise unto the Lord. She is preceded in death by her late husbands, Jerome Abel and Vernon Harris. She is survived by her children: Patricia Harris, Shaniquea Quarantiello (Anthony), Jeremy Abel, and Tamu Davenport; and is preceded in death by her beloved son, Terrance Broxton. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—Dorian, Mildred, Devree, Miriam, Jeremy II, Maximus, Melody, No’Cee, Messiah, Jasper, and Neon—carry forward her legacy, along with a host of adopted loved ones.
