Michael Erwin

Peacefully on December 7, 2006, Michael Erwin, Sr. suddenly departed this life. Michael, the only child of the late John and Marion Erwin, was born on July 21, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland.Michael, affectionately known as Mike received his education in both the Virginia and Baltimore City Public School Systems and graduated from Edmondson High School in 1965. He later received his degree in Mortuary Science from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Services in New York in 1974. After receiving his degree, Michael completed an internship with Morton and Dyett Funeral Home and soon established a twelve year career with March Funeral Home. Michael was also certified as a system operator for the Baltimore City Department of Public Works for 30 years. Michael joined the armed forces in 1966 and served as a Staff Sergeant in the Vietnam War. During his service, he received numerous awards and citations. He was honorably discharged in 1972 and joined the Maryland National Guard in 1977 where he earned the ranking of Sergeant First Class. Michael military career was coupled with service in Prince Hall Lodge #38 where he once held the position of Senior Deacon. His son, Michael, Jr., currently holds this position. He entered into holy matrimony with the love of his life, Gloria Porter, in 1995. They shared three children: Michael, Jr., Danielle and Marion. Michael was a God-given man who loved his church and pastor. Most of all he loved God! His family was everything to him. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Michael was an active church member who served on numerous ministries. His favorite was the male choir. Michael also enjoyed camping, computers, science fiction, being with his van club and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He leaves to mourn: his devoted wife, Gloria; three children, Michael, Jr., Danielle and Marion; four grandchildren, Michael Ill, Sydney, Andrew and Jeremiah; two son-in-laws, Andrew and Malcolm; in-laws, Randolph and Ann Porter; two sister-in-laws; two brother-in-laws, one who preceded him in death; four aunts; one uncle who has always been like a father to him, Dr. Joshua Mitchell and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
