Melvin Hodge

Melvin Leon Hodge, Sr. affectionately known as “Rabbi” was born April 19, 1958, Sumter, South Carolina to Curtis Hodge, Sr. and Shirley Hodge, who preceded him in death. Melvin was the third oldest of seven children, Linda Butler, Curtise Hodge, Jr. and Karen Hodge who preceded him in death. After a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Dementia, God summoned Melvin home on Saturday, October 4, 2025, as the set for the evening. Melvin grew up in a close net family where they always had his back. If you mess with one you had to fight them all Melvin received his education in the Baltimore City School System. He was known for carrying just a few sheets of notebook paper a pencil in his back pocket. Melvin was known for being a terrific artist and school was not his priority. Mama Shirley told him “If you’re not in school then you have to get a job” and he did just that. From then on, he never stopped working until he was injured in August 2017. He loved to work with his hands His first job was in a tire shop. Melvin also worked in construction repairing and renovating homes. One of Melvin’s last employers was Potts and Callahan Construction where he laid black on our city and county streets and loved doing that work. S few of Melvins’s hobbies were boxing as young man and playing pool every day at the Garden ‘s Bar on Erdman Avenue. He was very competitive and didn’t like losing. Melvin had three children from prior relationships, Katina, Melvin, Jr and Sabrina who he loved dearly, later in life, his spiritual journey led him to new Harvest Ministries, where he surrendered his life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When Melvin enjoyed a sermon, everyone in the congregation would know because he would boldly shout “There You Go” In 2006, Melvin met his wife Shamar at the New Harvest Ministries They joined in holy matrimony on May 28, 2011, and from this union two children were born Ava and Kayla. Melvin enjoyed watching old TV show like Sanford and Son, The little Rascals and the three Stooges, with his girls. You could hear their laughter all through the house. The memory of Melvin will be forever cherished by his wife Shamar Hodge, four daughters Katina Weidford-Berry McClain (son-in-law, Vicent McClain). Sabrina Alexander, Ava Hodge, Kayla Hodge and stepdaughter Sabrina Brewer, only son Melvin L. Hodge, Jr. siblings, Dorothy Hodge, Timothy and Bernie Hodge, four grandchildren, Denea, Amahri, Mariah and Ti-Yon, two great-grandchildren, Marley and Micah and host of relatives and friends
