Maude L. Adkins

Maude Lena Spencer Adkins humble life’s journey began on February 9, 1936 in Gloucester, Virginia to the late Philip Spencer and Maude Pollard Banks Spencer. She transitioned peacefully from this life on August 30, 2019 at her sister and brother-in-law’s home in Williamsburg, Virginia. God in His infinite and divine wisdom will reunite Maude Lena and her late husband, William Thomas Adkins seven years and one day later in eternity forever. At an early age Maude Lena accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and became a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Gloucester, Virginia. After graduating from T.C. Walker school in Gloucester, VA Maude Lena moved to Baltimore, Maryland and made it her home with her great-uncle. She became a member of Sharon Baptist Church where her late great- uncle, Hezekiah Spencer and his family were members. She remained an active and supportive member for 60 or more years until health issues became a concern. Maude Lena was a member of the Deaconess Ministry, for which she was consecrated as a Deaconess on November 17, 1996. She was also a member of the Friendship Group and the Matrons Missionary Society. On August 12, 1961 Maude Lena was united in marriage to her soul mate and friend William Thomas Adkins. From this union they were blessed with three daughters, Cheryl Yvonne Adkins, the late Karen Lynn Adkins, and Carol Fay Adkins. Maude Lena ended her career as a clerk with 30 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Rite Aid Drug Store. Maude Lena enjoyed entertaining family and friends, traveling, plants, cooking, and shopping (especially window shopping), and the Home Shopping Channel, she would often say, “she only needed enough money for lunch”. Her love of family was shown through the planning and preparation of her Annual Family Thanksgiving Dinner which became a Family Tradition. She considered sharing their home to be a blessing and used that love for feeding anyone, family or friend, who desired a meal. Regardless of your visit, planned or not, she always had something for you to eat before you left their home. That talent was truly a God given gift of hospitality. Her family and guests found her home to be the place to experience her warm and generous hospitality for which she was well known. Maude Lena was always known for her generosity and kindness, especially toward her younger siblings. Each year at the beginning of the school year, Christmas and occasionally in the spring of the year, there was always a huge package in the mail with something for each sibling that was needed and helped out the family. And as the younger siblings grew up that generosity was extended to her nieces and nephews. The word of God says “as a man soweth so shall he reap”. That biblical principle became an opportunity for her siblings to sow back into her life. In July, her siblings moved her to Virginia to care for her and sow back into her life as she had sown into their lives.
