Mattie R. Hopkins

MATTIE RUTH (COOPER) HOPKINS, daughter of the late William Cooper and the late Elcie Chander Cooper, was born April 18th 1934 in Dillion, SC,.She departed this life June 23, 2023 at Autumn Lake - Parkville Nursing facility. Mattie received her education in Dillion County public school system. Her family were farmers, therefore she worked hard picking cotton and handling tobacco until they moved to Baltimore. in 1959. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior early in her life under the leadership of Pastors John and Cecelia Ellis at Pentecost United Holy Church. she worked faithfully in the church with the choir. Mattie met and married Raphael Richard Hopkins Sr .(aka Ray) October 2, 1960, From this union they were blessed with one son, Raphael Richard Hopkins , Jr. Ray preceded her in death. When her son started school, she returned to the work field, starting with Stewart's Department store as a Sales Clerk. She left Stewart's and began working at Lane Bryant Department Store, working her way up to Sales Manager, Her final employment was at K-Mart Stores as Sales Manager from which she retired. When she moved to Essex, she began her fellowship with First Baptist Church of Back River. She loved her church and worked faithfully as Vice President of the Wisdom Circle and Ushering until her health began to fail. Mattie loved spending time with her family and friends. She also loved cooking. She made the best sweet potato pies. Her family depended on her for sweet potato pies and potato salad for all family gatherings. She will be great missed! Shes leaves o cherish her memory; her son, Raphael Richard (Jacqueline) Hopkins Jr.; grandson, Raphael Richard Hopkins III; granddaughter, Rachael A. Hopkins; her grandchildren's mother, Monya Hopkins; her Caregiver (niece) Maedell Barnes; many other nieces, nephews and cousins, her Pastor, Rev. James E. Modlin and her First Baptist Church of Back River Church family ; her Special Golden Girls friends, Marie Polite, Betty Johnson, Gloria Cornish, Mary Hill , Rosa Morgan , and Rebecca Goode; and a host of other friends. Her four brothers and four sister's , Willis, Eugene, Bishop Leroy, Calvin Cooper, Evangelist Ruby Parham, Sallie Rowell, Roseanner Casey and Betty Ann Frederick preceded her in death.
