Mary Trice Wells

The Legacy of Mary Augusta Trice Wells Our beloved Mary Augusta Trice Wells, 83, departed this life on February 18, 2014. She was born May 9, 1930 in Richmond, Virginia to the proud first-time parents of the late James Mason Trice, Sr. and Lillian Augusta. She was the oldest of three siblings. She is preceded in death by her grandson, Phillip N. Hieskell. Mary received her basic education in the Richmond Public School System, attending Navy Hill Elementary School, Booker T. Washington High School and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1947. She then matriculated at Virginia Union University, Richmond Virginia. She received her degree in Elementary Education and then followed her heart and taught school just outside of Richmond in Surry County, Virginia. Her dream teaching position was with Richmond Public Schools where she was an award winning English Teacher. Mary often stated the only career she wanted was to teach children and she did that well. After retiring Mary became a Reading Tutor and Substitute Teacher for the Richmond Public School System. At an early age, Mary attended Fifth Street Baptist Church where she accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of 11 by Reverend Scott. She was a member of the Ladies Usher Board #2, the Federated Missionary Organization Circle #7 and a member of the Tessie Davidson Church School Class. She also was a very active member of The International Organization of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., Alpha Zeta Chapter. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted husband, Solomon R. Wells Jr.; two daughters, Sylvia Y. Wells (Bernard Griffin) and Danette Wells Hieskell (Phillip Jr.); three grandchildren, Justin J. Hieskell, Trayon T. Hieskell and Andre R. Betheá; one great-grandchild, Aniyah A. Hieskell; sister, Ophelia A. Trice; brother, James M. Trice Jr. (Gloria); niece, Sheila E. Stewart; nephew, Dr. James “Jim” Trice III, and a host of other relatives and loving friends. The Broken Chain We little knew that day God was going to call your name In life we loved you dearly in death, we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; For part of us went with you the day God called you home You left us beautiful memories . . . your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again.
