Mary E. Riddick

Mary Ethel Riddick, daughter of the late Mack and Nellie Mondie was born on May 15, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland. Her earthly Christian journey ended on Wednesday, march 15, 2017. Mary, affectionately known as " Toots" was the oldest of four children. She was preceded in death by her three younger brothers Russell, Clinton (Jenny), and Clauzell Mondie (Myra). Mary grew up on a farm in Dundalk, Maryland. In 1942, she moved her family to Turner Station and received her education in the Baltimore County Public School System where she attended Sollers Point High School. She was baptized at an early age at New Shiloh Baptist Church in Turners Station, Maryland. In 1952, Mary joined the newly founded Greater Saint John Baptist Church (her parents were founders), under the auspices of the late Reverend Dr. David B. Banks. She was a committed member, served as president of the senior choir, and attended services regularly until her health waned. For over thirty-five years Mary worked as a dedicated employee at Baltimore Federal Savings and Loan in Baltimore City. She retired in 1986. Mary was a hearty and robust person who lived life to the fullest. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling and visited several national and international destinations. Later in life, one of her favorite pastimes was sitting on her front porch greeting neighbors as they walked by or conversing with those who chose to sit and chat a while. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Mary was blessed with a son, James, "C". The two of them shared a lot of time together and, more than anything, she enjoyed cooking, watching, television, shopping and enjoying a good seafood dinner at Red Lobster with her son. She leaves to cherish her memory: loving and devoted son, James Shelton Sr.; a special friend, sheila Fenwick; three grandchildren, Desiree Gordon, James Shelton Jr. (Pauleen) and Derrick Shelton (Katrina); one sister-in-law, Myra Mondie; five great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jamal, Evan, Derrell and Alisha; two great-great-grandchildren, Riyan and Jamal Jr.; an enduring best friend Edna Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
