Mary Lorraine Quivers

On Wednesday, April 18, 2012, after a prolonged illness, God, in His Infinite Wisdom, dispatched an angel and closed the “Book of Life” for Mary Lorraine Quivers. This book was just short of sixty-four chapters full with richness of the love of God, family and friends. Mary was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 4, 1948 to the late James Samuel and Erma Sykes. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Virginia, Allen, Calvin, James and William. Many affectionately called her Lorraine. To know her was to love her. She was raised in a Christian home and was taught the love of Christ at an early age. During her youth, she was baptized at Friendship Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Rev. William McCoy. Later her spiritual journey led her to Good Shepherd Baptist Church, Rev. Restia Whitaker, Pastor. Mary was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and was a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. In her season of labor, she was briefly employed at London Fog, Followed by employment at the Social Security Administration. She remained there for thirty-two years until her health began top decline. While league bowling at colt Lanes at Woodlawn, Charles Quivers and Mary Samuel met, fell in love and married on June 5, 1982. They were abundantly blessed with a son, Anthony Justin Quivers; their pride and joy. Mary was a very dedicated and devoted wife and mother. She and her husband often enjoyed watching football together. The Ravens became her favorite team. Baseball games began to be shared as her interest in sports grew. Sewing was another interest. There was a special gown she made and wore proudly. Listening and enjoying old gospel songs was a serenity source. Rhythm and Blues was also a favorite. No one could describe a soap opera episode as vivid as Mrs. Quivers. It was like real life! The adoring mother side of Mary was so genuinely displayed with her son. Being very active and supportive in Anthony’s life was an encouraging attribute to his success. In her last days, she professed her strong relationship with the Lord. “I am tired, I am weak, I am worn.” Mary’s favorite scripture was Psalm 23: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me. Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. The “Book of Eternal Life” for Mary Larraine Quivers has arrived in the Master’s heavenly library. In that “Great Getting’ Up Morning,” we will meet again and have a “Book” signing like none other. Her precious and treasured memories have been left to: her husband, Charles; son, Anthony; mother-in-law, Louise Quivers; sister, Marion Foster (Preston); brothers, Raymond Sykes and Keith Samuel; sisters-in-law, Vivian Sykes, Kim Samuel, Robin Quivers (NY) and Joan McClinton; brothers-in-law, Howard Quivers and Harry Quivers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
