Mary Johns

MARY MAGDALINE JOHNS was born on December 7, 1939, to the late John and Anna Lewis in Baltimore, Maryland. She was peacefully called home on September 7, 2024. Mary was joined in holy matrimony to James E. Johns II and out of this union came James Johns III, affectionately known as Boogie. Mary received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System. She graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School. Mary retired from Carr Lowery Glass Company where she manufactured glass bottles for pharmaceutical and perfume industries. She exhibited a great work ethic. Mary accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age. She was later filled with the Holy Ghost. Mary attended The Highway Christian Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Charles Brown, where she was a long-time member. While a member at The Highway Christian Church, she became an ordained Evangelist, and she was the President of the Prayer Ministry. She was a member of the Senior Choir, and she also served on the Trustee and Nurse Board. In 2007, Mary joined Greater Saint Stephen's Apostolic Church of GOD under the leadership of the late Elder Victor B. Jackson Sr. During her time at Greater Saint Stephen's, she served as a Church Mother, Minister, and Trustee. She was also a member of the Pastor's Aide Committee and sang on the Senior Choir. In 2016, Mary joined Restoration Worship Center under the leadership of Bishop James Sutton, where she served faithfully as Church Mother until she was called home. Mary's dedication and love for God was unmatched. Mary lived a very fulfilled life. She loved serving the Lord and was not afraid to talk about his goodness. Her legacy as a woman of God and her continuous preaching of the Gospel led her family and others to Christ. She enjoyed attending Sunday worship (where she could be spotted wearing a glamorous church hat), Bible Class, and Prayer Service. Mary was devoted to her 3:00 a.m. prayer hour where she would commune with her Father and intercede on behalf of others. She was also a spiritual advisor and a prayer warrior to many who crossed her path. Mary was the matriarch of her family and enjoyed being catered to. She enjoyed the Holidays and loved spending time with her family. At family gatherings, you could find her telling old family stories, laughing, smiling, and looking at her family in admiration, Mary also loved to travel to Virginia to visit with her cousins. Mary's passions were cooking and baking. Her specialties were collard greens, oatmeal cookies, and coconut pineapple cake. Mary also enjoyed crocheting and taught this hobby to her family members. She would knit personalized blankets for each child that was born into the family. Mary also enjoyed shopping, going out to restaurants, watching television, listening to gospel music, getting her nails done, and eating seafood. Mary was witty and good at playing Connect 4. She also enjoyed having tea parties. Mary had an infectious spirit. Everywhere Mary went she was admired for her gentle love and kindness. Her love for people often resulted in her adopting others as family or creating long lasting friendships. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her son James Johns III; ten brothers Leroy Johnson, John (Steve), Arthur, Paul, David, Joseph (Joe), William (Will), James (Jamie), Matthews (Preacher), and Robert Lewis, and three sisters Alice White, Betty Reynolds, and Anna Ross. Mary Johns leaves to mourn her loss and cherish her memory: two grandsons, James Johns IV (Abigail Johns) and Jason Johns (Nicole Smith-Johns); seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Ja'Niaya, Zoey, Amelia, Jayce, Jaylyn and Jayden Johns; four sisters-in-law, Mary Francis & Beverly Lewis, Ruth Johns, and Martha Floyd; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and prayer partners.
