Mary Jackson

Mary Jackson, lovingly known as Shorty, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 28, 1930, to Henry and Annie Jackson.Mary was the fourth of six children born to Annie Jackson. Mary’s father, Henry Jackson worked at Sparrow’s Point. Her mother, Annie was a dedicated domestic worker who took care of her home and family.Mary grew up in East Baltimore on Jefferson Street with her sisters Lethia and Bessie, and her brother Henry Jr. Her two eldest brothers, John Henry and William Henry grew up in Prospect, Virginia.Mary graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School. Later, she worked at Union Memorial Hospital, where she was employed for thirty years. As a devoted daughter, Mary left Union Memorial to care for her mother through her bout with Alzheimer’s Disease. Mary loved to crochet, knit and play cards. She was always interested in what others were doing. She enjoyed trips south to visit relatives and her family’s birthplace.Mary Jackson succumbed to her illness on August 9, 2003. During her final days, she was surrounded by the love of her family and friends.Mary (Shorty) is survived by: sisters, Lethia and Bessie; her two older brothers, John Henry and William Henry; brothers-in-law, Grafton (Bugs) Matthews and James (Bobby) Smith; nieces and nephews, Grafton, Jr., Leonard, Antoinette, Kenneth, Bernard, Leslie, Carl, Denise, Karen and Keith; two nieces of her deceased brother, Henry Jr.; great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives. She will also be missed by her stepsister Vera Trice, good friend Hilda Wheatley and a host of friends.Mary Jackson lived a productive and full life as she inspired her loved ones and friends alike. Her warm smiles, sense of humor and enthusiasm will always be remembered. She was a very loving person. She made every child her child. As we send her off, we must not grieve, but use her loving memory as the focus and example for great contributions and sharing in a world that needs the warmth and consideration as exemplified by her life here with us.The family derives much comfort in knowing that on July 27, 2003, Mary received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. We do not grieve as those without hope, for we know that in Christ, if she is absent from the body she is present with the Lord.
