Mary Lee Cotman

Surrounded by her family, God called his child, his faithful servant, Mary Lee Cotman to come home and be with him on July 1, 2016. She was born on January 15, 1934 to the late James Flankton and Molly Lee of Charles City, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband John R. Cotman, Sr., siblings, Howard Banks, Ruth Lee, Nancy Cutler and Betty Lee. She was educated in the Charles City School system and a graduate of Ruthville High School. In 1946 she was baptized and joined Liberty Baptist Church. She was a member of the Willing Workers, served as Assistant Secretary for the Sunday School, and also taught Sunday School. She worked on the Homecoming committee and sang on both the senior and combined choirs. Her favorite song was “Get Right with God.” She was the “Chef” for many years at the former Martha Washington Inn in Providence Forge, VA. She later served as a domestic worker for several years and retired in 2014. She was an active member of the Charles City Branch NAACP, Charles City Civic League and Charles City Spiritual Ensemble. She served as Chairman of the Charles City Fair Committee for several years. As an exhibitor, she won several “First Prize Blue Ribbons” for her famous rolls, cakes and pies; especially her apple pies! She leaves to cherish and celebrate her memory with six loving children and their devoted spouses; Karen Lee McInnis(Len),Ronald L. Cotman(Brenda),John R. Cotman,Jr.(Vanessa),Avis C. Brown and Iris Carter, a host of loving nieces,nephews,family and friends,(2)extended family members, Wanda White and Marquetta Melvin, and a forever childhood friend, Shirley Barbour. God’s Faithful and Loving Servant-gone home but never forgotten!
