Mary B. Bevans

On Saturday May 4th, 2019 MARY BLANCHE BEVANS quietly slipped away to be with her Savior. Mary Bevans was born on July 26, 1923. She was the oldest of three children born to the late Stewart W. Smith Sr. and Mary C. Smith. Mary was introduced to religion at an early age. In her youth the Smith family were members of Union Baptist Church. Later in life she converted to Catholicism. Mary was educated in the Baltimore City public school system, graduating from Frederick Douglass High School in 1941. She attended Coppin Teachers’ College and received a Bachelor’s Degree in education. She then attended Johns Hopkins University where Mary received a Master’s Degree in education. Mary was an educator for the Baltimore City public school system for 32 years teaching sixth grade. Mary wed the late William Bevans Jr. on November 26, 1945. Their loving relationship lasted 55 years until William’s death in 2000. From this union are three children: Marilyn, William III and Francine. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother who was always available to everyone whether you were family or a friend. Mary had a wonderful personality and loved to have a good time. She was a member of a travel club and two social clubs, “The Ten Club” and the “Lordes and Ladies”. She also loved going to casinos, attending dances and drinking Margaritas. At 91 years old, she went to see Beyonce’ at M&T Bank Stadium. Mary also enjoyed attending her senior fitness class. Mary loved going to her summer home in St. Mary’s County at Longview Beach. Mary was the financial secretary for over 20 years. Mary had many wonderful friends at Longview Beach that she loved dearly. Mary leaves to cherish their memories: two daughters, Marilyn Bevans and Francine Allen; her son, William A Bevans III; son-in-law, Anthony Allen; sister-in-law, Christine Smith; three grandchildren, William X. Bevans, (Rebecca Butchok) Cherie Allen and Christina Allen; great-granddaughter, Quinn Bevans and great-grandson, Liam Cheney; dedicated nephew, Russell Anthony (Margaret Anthony); a loving goddaughter, Kim Kidd; devoted friend and caregiver, Annette Bruce; devoted family friend, Berkley Allison; longtime friends from Longview Beach, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Daniels; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many caring friends.
