Mary Carol Ammons

On May 23, 2014 MARY CAROL was called from labor to reward. She transitioned peacefully at Sinai Hospital surrounded by her family. Mary was born in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Alice Barber. Her early education was in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Saint Francis Academy, from which she graduated. She later attended Morgan State College graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree. She later pursued a Master’s Degree from that same institution. Mary truly enjoyed her career as an elementary school teacher of first graders and often remarked that she would strive to be her personal best and for her students to strive to be the best. As was her style in decorating, Mary was intent on making the classroom a happy environment for learning. After 30 years of dedicated service to the Baltimore City Public School System, Mary retired in 1989. She touched many lives of her students and parents. Mary began her Christian journey at an early age in the Catholic Church and was a devout member of the New All Saints Roman Catholic Church which she supported with her presence and gifts. She often said, she felt that Fr. Sterling was talking directly to her during his sermon. As a result, church was a significant part of the family’s life. Mary met the love of her life, Robert Ammons, Jr.; they married and were blessed with two devoted children, Rona and Bobby. Their home was filled with love and support for their family. Mary was a member of the Silhouettes (Kappa Wives), Ashburton Family Group and an original member of Viva, a child study group. Mary was a very quiet but sincere and compassionate person who loved her family. She enjoyed decorating her home and traveling, especially the Alaskan Cruise and going to the theatre with her dear friend Shirley Hargrove. Mary’s illness was short lived, however she kept the faith and often said, “I will be alright”. She faced this battle with courage and love. Mary leaves to rejoice in her memory: her husband of 58 years, Robert Ammons, Jr.; her daughter, Rona Dixon (Billy); son, Robert Ammons, III (Stacy); five grandchildren, Richard Wiley (Joan), Jonathan Wiley, Erika Bell, Eryn Ammons and Eve Ammons; brother, Richard Barber (Jacqueline); sister, Nancy Price; brothers-in-law, Hiram (Peggy), Haywood (Theresa); niece, Stephanie Barber; nephew, Huru Price; dear cousins, Marilyn Johnson and Kim Johnson-Smith; and other relatives and friends who will greatly miss her. There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven.
