Martinus E. Westray

Martinus Estee Westray, beloved son of Henry and Daisy Westray, was born on the 8th day of April1953 in Baltimore, Maryland. He quietly entered eternal rest Friday, May 23,2008 in the afternoon.Martinus was a 1971 graduate of City College High School, graduated from Morgan State University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, and received a Masters degree from Johns Hopkins University in Education inn1983. He enjoyed teaching and was an Assistant Professor in the ACE Program at the Baltimore City Community College. He was also a pert time instructor at the South Baltimore Learning Center. At both institutions he was loved and admired by his students and fellow faculty members until his passing.While a student at Morgan State University, Martinus joined the Morgan State University Community choir. Because of a love of music, he continued to sing with Morgan’s choir for many years after his graduation. Martinus was an active member of the City Temple of Baltimore Baptist Church Choir where he sang and played piano for the choir.Martinus was known affectionately to his family and friends as Marty. Those who knew Marty knew his vibrancy for life, his love of people, passion foe music, his intelligence and creativity. He was blessed with a keen wit, a giving spirit, a talent for math, writing school curriculum, building computers, and for reaching out to troubled students. It was amazing how he could juggle many projects and tasks at once. He had a bold upbeat spirit, a sweet generous nature, and was a vibrant force that seemed to always be on the move. He always seemed to have a menagerie of papers, books, and computer parts everywhere. What surprised us most was how he was always able to find what he needed in what seemed to be an apocalypse of items thrown together. Many know of his loving heart and how he would always be there to offer a helping hand to others. Marty had many challenges in his life and was fortunate to be able to overcome most. In his most difficult moments, he was still able to give others an uplifting smile, words of encouragement, and to tell a joke. The joy in his life was his entire family, especially his daughter, Tressa. Marty we miss you so much!Cherishing the wonderful memories of Marty is his loving and devoted daughter, Tressa Harris and son-in-law, William Harris, Jr.; his grandchildren Charneisha Moore, William Collin Harris, and Kori Harris; a great grandson Isaiah James; his mother Daisy Powell; father, Henry Westray; and brothers Henry Westray, Jr., Tony Westray, and half brother, William Wall. His half brother Rufus Larry Shoffner preceded him in death. Marty also leaves to mourn his passing a host of relatives and friends.May the love of God enfold him in his eternal arms.
