Martha V. Woodard

Martha Victoria Woodard, was born Juley 6, 1938 to the union of George W. and Maggie Brown-Sawyer in Fairfield, South Carolina. She was the baby of 15 chidren. Her siblings were Young, James, George, Babe, Maggie, Samuel, Chester, Nathaniel, Sallie, Julia whom all preceded her in death: Mary, Sallie Bell, Celia and John. After a lengthy illness she was called home to be the lord on October 28, 2011. Martha was reared in a Christian home and, at an early age, accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized at Shady Grove A.M.E. Church, now called Shady Grove Independent Church in Winnsvoro, Fairfield County, South Carolina where she remained a faithful member for life. Martha was educated in the public school system of Fairfield South Carolina. Martha came to Baltimore, Maryland in 1957 where she met and married her childhood sweetheart the late William Woodard. In 1980 she became a member of Sweet Prospect Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Adam Turnage. She was a member of the Pastor's Aid committee. She made annual Pilgrimages to her home Church Shady Grove AME. Martha(A.K.A Beautiful, Mickey, Butterball, Ducks, and Fats). Her greatest accomplishment was undoubtedly the warm loving and safe home she provided for her children, grandchildren and anybody who needed a place to stay. She was a caring and loving person who would take anybody in to feed and put clothes on their back. She touched the lives of everyone she met. She has always veen a mother to the motherless. Every holiday she would make sure one of her children or grandchildren would take a plate of food to her brother John. She was a small woman in stature, but big in heart and would never give up her fight of independence, even to the end. A praying mother who sure her family was grounded in church. She would always have an ear to listen. She should have started her own telephone hotline. She kept the same phone number for over 37 years. She loved watching old westerns and game shows. She loved cooking for everybody. To her family she was the best cook in the world. Nobody could touch her food especially her macaroni and cheese, homemade stuffing along with her sweet potato pies. She was a very detailed person. Any business calls, appointments, and important information regarding her family, from her children to her great grandchildren, she would have it written down word for word. Martha leaves to cherish her memories a longtime campanion Richard Deas; seven children: Juan (Tina), Catherine (Huntsy), Cecelia (Thomas), Todd (preceded her in death), Kevin, Helen, Charlene (Gregory), six sisters-in-laws; May and Ellen (preceded her in death); Bertha, Rebecca, Margaret, Estelle; three brothers- in- law, Sam, Richard and Roosevelt (preceded her in death); 15 grandchildren; Jakeraman, Shawn, Dante (preceded her in death),Lermaine, Chante (Darryl), Danelle, Monte, Bartaya, Quante, Tiara, Carnell; 12 great granchildren; Divine, Dadrian, Justice, Jordan, D'mani, Kaiya, Kiara, Makenze, Darryla, Dante, Doriyan, Jemir and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends too many to name.
