Martha Marshall

It all began when the late Deacon Clody Floyd of Pungoteague, VA and the late Jeanette Chesley of Baltimore, MD met, married and settled in Baltimore. On September 15, 1932 God Almighty blessed them with the birth of their second child, a daughter, She was named, Martha Dorcas Floyd. There would be a total of six children born to the couple.Martha received her education in the Baltimore public school system. As a daughter of a Deacon, Martha and her family would be very involved in church (Church of God Saints in Christ). She loved to share stories of what her father taught her and also how they believed in the power of prayer.Martha loved singing, poetry and sports! In her youth she could be found playing touch football and was well know for her outstanding baseball skills. Later in life whenever family reunions were held, everyone would her on their team because of her ability to hit home runs!Sports led Martha to meet James B. Marshall, the man she would marry. They were blessed with six children. The husband and wife team ran a tight ship! She was a stay at home Mother that gave her children memories of fresh bread baking and mouth watering, homestyle cooking.Martha’s greatest joy was children and laughter of other people’s children also filled her home. Martha was one to be encouraging and involved in every facet of her children’s education. She was an avid reader and built up a library for them. Martha made sure that each of her children did their homework. She made costumes, attended PTA meetings and assisted in the classrooms.As a Christian, she also knew the importance of training up a child in the ways of the Lord. Separately and collectively each of her children would hear the wonderful stories of God and His son, Jesus. She always heard their prayers at the end of a day.Martha was also very proud of her African American, Cherokee and Irish heritage. She taught her Children and Grandchildren to embrace their ancestory with pride.After the death of her husband James, Martha and two of her daughters (Barbara and Inez) moved to Augusta, GA. She lived 115 minutes from Vera, another daughter, and her family.Martha’s health begin to decline over 16 years ago. Four times the doctors thought there was no hope of her recovering. Her children started praying chains and God spread her four times.On Monday, April 20, 2009 at University Hospital in Augusta, GA God called Martha to her eternal home. She was seventy- six years old.Martha is predeceased by: her parents, Clody and Jeanette Floyd; husband, James B. Marshall; brothers, James Jeremiah Floyd, Hiram Floyd; sister, Mary M. Naomi Floyd; brothers-in-law, William Marshall, Robert Marshall, and Howard Marshall.She leaves to mourn: her sisters, Queen Elizabeth Floyd, Esther Pearl Murry; sisters-in-law, Inez Stokes, Rita Marshall, Phyllis Marshall, Helen Marshall, all of Baltimore, MD; brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Rev. Leon Marshall & Evang. Jean Marshall of Greenville, North Carolina; six children, Evang, Jeanette Spann, Ewing, NJ, Mary Barbara Marshall, Augusta, GA, Martha Vera Larry of Augusta, Deacon James N. Marshall, Baltimore, Maryland, Inez Elizabeth Marshall of Augusta, GA and Linda Maria Bannister, Baltimore, MD; two sons-in-law, Kenneth M. Larry, Augusta, GA. And Gregory Bannister of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren; eight great grand children a host a special nieces, nephews, and other “adopted” children.
