Martha Delores Starkes

MARTHA D. STARKES, daughter of the late Howard and Ellen Jackson, was born on April 10, 1933 in Baltimore, Maryland. She unexpectedly departed this life on August 21, 2007 after a lengthy illness.She received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System. After completion of her high school education, she went on to a vocational business school where she earned a diploma and later became employed with the State of Maryland She enjoyed her job as postal clerk at the State Office Building where she remained until mid 1995 when she made the decision to take an early retirement for medical reasons. She was a long time, and very faithful and dedicated member of St. Timothy’s Christian Baptist Church at 4007 Groveland Ave., under the leadership of Dr. Carl L. Washington, Senior Pastor. She truly enjoyed her time spent with her church family and loved worshiping the LORD. “Ma,” as she was affectionately known not only by her children but by most who knew her, enjoyed spending time with her family and friends; especially trips to the park/beach, cookouts, shopping, watching movies, going to the theater, and spending quiet Sunday tea with Mrs. Lewis, her sister-in-Christ and long time neighbor. Momma was a joy for everyone who knew and those who met her. Her smile was like a beacon in the night, because it guided everyone straight towards her heart.She met and married Donald E. Starkes, and from that union seven children were born, two of whom preceded her in death.She leaves to mourn: three sons, Donald M., Darryl E. and Charles D. Starkes; two daughters, Diane P. Starkes-Ross and Ellen R. Molock; two stepdaughters, Terri Johnson and Donna Starkes; twelve grandchildren, Lavinia Johnson, Clyde Tatum, Martear Starkes-Williams, Gaynelle Rouzser, Alphonso Spencer Jr., Warren Ross II, Nakkitta Starkes, Antoine Spencer, Desmond Ross, Brittany Spencer, Brianna Starkes, and Kori Johnson; thirty-four great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Kevin Molock; surrogate son-in-law, Albert Thomas; daughter-in-law, Sheila King-Starkes; remaining aunt, Annabelle Freeman; goddaughter, Zelda Diggs; godson, Jarrod Diggs; very close family friend, Jerome Frank Townes; a devoted family and friend, Momma Lewis and family; and a host of other family and friends.
