Marshall McCoy Ingram

Marshall Ingram, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Glen Allen, Virginia, on August 5, 2026, surrounded by his cherished family. Born on February 6, 1942, in the close-knit community of Valentines, Virginia, in Brunswick County, Marshall's life was a testament to love, service, and faith. Marshall was the devoted son of Frank and Naomi Ingram, who instilled in him the values of hard work and integrity. Predeceased by his parents and siblings Jerome, Albert (Wadell), Frank Jr., Alphonso, and sister Mamie Fields, Marshall is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Hazel “LaVerne,” and their sons Sean M.(Tanise) and Brigadier General Andre M. (Attiyya). His legacy extends to his five grandchildren: Dr. Myca J., Ensign Sean M., Ryan Marshall, Aaliyah N., and Andre M. Ingram. He is also survived by his sisters Virginia Short, Kathleen Stokes, Joyce Mason, Maureen Ingram, brother Larry Ingram, aunt Reverend Barbara E. Ingram, uncle Lawrence Ingram, brother-in-law Melvin Johnson (Joyce) and God daughter Ariel Cole-Porter, along with a host of nieces, nephews, close friends and extended family who will forever hold him in their hearts. Marshall's journey of life was one marked by education, service, and a profound dedication to his community and country. He attended James Solomon Russell High School, he pursued higher education at Saint Leo’s College, earning a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. His commitment to serving others was further exemplified by his honorable service in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1969, which included a tour in Vietnam and a role as a platoon sergeant at the Marine Barracks in Naples, Italy. After his military service, Marshall embarked on a career in law enforcement with the Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department, where he worked as a patrolman, investigator, and sergeant. His career path then led him to the Virginia Electric and Power Company, later known as Dominion Power, where he served as an investigator until his retirement in 1994. Unready to slow down, Marshall returned to serve as a Security Director within the VCU Police Department before retiring again in 2002. His later years were filled with diverse roles, from baking at Ukrop’s to substitute teaching and working security at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. A man of deep faith, Marshall found his spiritual home at Seven Pines Baptist Church, where he served with passion as a trustee, choir member, church school teacher, and Chairman of the Deacon Board. After relocating to Glen Allen, he and LaVerne continued their spiritual journey as faithful members of Bethlehem Baptist Church. His life was a living testament to the teachings of the Apostle Paul, focusing on faith, grace, and new life in Christ. Marshall had a zest for life that was evident in his hobbies and interests. An avid football fan, he passionately supported the Washington Redskins/Commanders, and was a familiar face at local Highland Springs High School football games. His love for the game extended to coaching youth football, where he not only taught skills but also nurtured the character of young players. In his leisure, Marshall was an avid golfer. On June 28, 2002 he scored a hole in one at the Queenfield Golf Club. He also enjoyed fishing with LaVerne, not for sport, but for the joy of a fresh catch for the pan. His storytelling was legendary, weaving tales from his upbringing on a tobacco farm to his adventures in the Marine Corps. Marshall's stories were filled with warmth and humor, shared not just for entertainment, but to pass on wisdom and life lessons. Marshall's life was an embodiment of service, commitment, and love, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in his memory to Seven Pines Baptist Church or a charity of your choice. Marshall's spirit and memories will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to have known him. May he rest in peace, embraced by the love of his family and the grace of his faith.
