Marie S. Johnson

MARIE SKINNER JOHNSON was born January 1, 1906 in Plum Point, Maryland. She was one of eight children born to Nellie Harrod. Her siblings Lemual, William, Ben, Laura, Ada, Mary and Ruth all preceded her in death.Marie became a Christian at an early age and she joined Enon Baptist Church after she moved to Baltimore in 1924. At the time Enon was on Park Ave. and the church was under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Arthur J. Payne. She joined the Female Usher Board, served as Recording Secretary, attended Sunday Church School, BYPU and later joined the Sanctuary Choir, Ivy Leaf Circle, Volunteer Circle and Jones Watkins Missionary Circle.In 1925 she met William P. Johnson, who she affectionately called “Pickle Pie,” and they married on August 15, 1928. Although they had no children of their own they adopted their niece Dorothy, who became the child they longer for. They enjoyed traveling to Virginia, Canada and vacationed every year in Wildwood, New Jersey. Additionally, they had a large circle of friends that looked forward to sharing holidays, birthdays and special events with them.When Bill was selected for the Deacon Board at Enon, Marie proudly and eagerly joined the Deaconess Board. A few years later she joined the Open Door Ministry. Bill and Marie were married for sixty and this union was filled with happiness until his death in 1988.Marie was known for culinary skill. She enjoyed preparing special dishes for her husband, family, friends and for many, many church functions. Life to Marie was a blessing from God and she loved both God and life. She was a faithful and contributing member of Enon Baptist Church until her death.She also loved each one of her family in her own unique manner. She was generous, caring and supportive to their individual needs. Fond memories will always linger with her daughter Dorothy, all of her nieces, especially “the girls,” Regina and Paula; her other nieces, Virginia, Clarisa and Nellie; her nephews, Donald and Austin; her three grandchildren, Sharon, David and Donna; her eight great-grandchildren, Leah, Noah, Joshua, Kelleigh, Krystine, Rachel, Cameron and Gabriel; her special friends, Margaret Hall and Willie Mae Stanley; her very kind neighbors, Claude and Theresa Bonaparte.Marie has closed her eyes and her soul has winged its way to Heaven after a remarkable one hundred and three years journey.
