Marie E. Owens

MARIE ELIZABETH OWENS was born November 3, 1929 in Western Chapel, Maryland to the late Bertha and Weber “Jack” Squirrel. Early Wednesday morning, January 2, 2013, Marie peacefully accepted God’s will: quietly, and with dignity, strength and faith. Marie was raised and educated in Westminster, Maryland where she lived before moving with her family to Baltimore approximately 60 years ago. Marie and the late James M. Owens, Jr., were the proud parents of nine children, five of whom preceded her in death, Marvin, Jeffrey, Edward “Jackie”, Larry and Joyce. She was a strong woman who met challenges with exceptional faith. Marie herself was the first born girl and the third child in a family of nine. There was never any doubt as to who was the matriarch of her family. Simply put, she loved her family. Marie considered her children, grandchildren, and extended family to be extremely important and worthy of any sacrifice. Her doors were always open. Marie’s home was frequently the hub of activity for day-to-day and holiday events. She had a beautiful smile that could put you at ease and a great sense of humor. There was also a no-nonsense side to her but her grandchildren knew well how to get around it. Her unconditional love for her children and family was like none other. Her “I am here for you” was unquestionable. She gave of herself easily and selflessly. Those who knew her loved and respected Ms. Marie. She made friends of all ages easily and was Mom or Grandma to many. Marie was a nurturer, helper, and problem solver. Family and neighbors could always depend on her. Quick of wit and fast of tongue, she always told it like it was. There was a deep spiritual side to Marie where judgment was slow in coming and mistakes easily forgotten. Marie enjoyed her family. She loved family celebrations and gatherings. She liked to dance, listen to back-in-the-day music, and more recently, watching movies with the kids and riding about town, especially to Westminster. Marie enjoyed the outdoor and gardening. She had a “green thumb” and could grow any plant. She enjoyed the company of friends and liked to keep her dog of 13 ½ years, Tutu, close by. Tutu was like another child who guarded Marie diligently with all the might of 10 pounds and a big bark. Marie considered being a mother the most important job in her life. She was loved deeply and unconditionally. During the final days of her life, Marie received her children with peace and grace. She conveyed wisdom, acceptance of God’s will, love and dignity. The legacy she leaves is rich and full of love. Marie leaves to celebrate her life and legacy: four children, James “Mack” (Cynthia), Mary Owens Southall (Tony), Donna Owens Wilson (Donald), and Michael; a brother, Clarence “Duke” Squirrel; two cousins-like sisters, Maryanne Squirrel and Jean Squirrel Perkins; 21 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
