Marie Vivian Oates

“Sleep on now and take your rest.” – Matthew 26:45 On Wednesday, January 4, 2017 GOD quietly spoke to Marie Vivian Mallory Oates, the daughter of the late Edward Sr. and Rebecca E. Mallory, was born on February 14, 1931 in Petersburg, VA. She was the fourth child of seven children. Her three sisters; Virginia M. Jones, Deloris M. Walls, Dorothy M. Blackwell and three brothers: Edward N. Mallory, Jr, John H. Mallory and Herbert N. Mallory preceded her in death. Marie was reared in a Christian home and accepted Jesus Christ at an early age, which is a testament to her longevity at Mount Lebanon. She was educated in the public school system of Petersburg, VA. In the summer months, Marie often stayed with her grandparents and other close relatives whose Christian values was a great part of her upbringing. Later, Marie settled in Baltimore and ultimately married Horace R. Oates, who preceded her in death. His active career in the Army made it possible for Marie to have extensive opportunities to travel and ultimately increased her knowledge of life. Marie held various jobs, with her last employment being the Supervisor of Maintenance for the Baltimore City Public Schools. Marie also was very civil minded and served as a Baltimore City Chief Election Judge. She joined Mount Lebanon Baptist Church in 1972, under the leadership of Rev. Olin P. Moyd. Ree (as she was affectionately called) was a very active member of the church. She served in Mount Lebanon Baptist Church as President of the Pastor’s Aides and President of the Missionaries. She was an active member in the American Baptist Women, Gospel Chorus, Senior Choir #2, Bible Class, Women’s Chorus, Kitchen Committee and various other organizations in the church. She also traveled to numerous conventions with the National Baptist Convention U.S.A., Inc. Women’s Auxiliary as a lifetime member. Marie was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star – Dawn of Light Chapter 3 and was the Past Matron from 1991 – 1992. Ree was an energetic person, sagacious, spoke her mind and could be opinionated. She enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved playing cards, entertaining family and friends, loved to shop and dress, with a flare of a fashion icon, a real Diva even at Gilchrist Center - Joseph Richey Hospice. She leaves to cherish her memory: a sister-in-law Doris Stallworth, nieces: Gwendolyn Mallory Carter, Cynthia L. Mallory, Beverly Jones, Terri Mallory, Cheryl Smith, Patricia Lewis, Felicia Stallworth, Deja Jackson, nephews: Edward Mallory, Jr., Carl Jones, Benjamin Jackson, Patrick Wilson, Horace Stallworth and Michael Stallworth, numerous great nieces and great nephews, cousins, godchildren Darlene Harris and Lawrence Holloway; a devoted daughter she never had, Geneva Freeman; her birthday club friends Queen E. Jones, Marie Hicks, Barbara Jackson, longtime friend Marlene Lee; her personal care provider at her home Fannie Holmes; Ernestine Beach and Mary Brown who took her to her doctor’s appointments , along with other family and friends.
