Marie K. Fortune

On Saturday, December 17, 2005, MARIE ZENOBIA KINNEY FORTUNE peacefully departed this life after a lengthy illness. Marie Fortune was born on January 21, 1929 in Hanley, W. Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Wallace and Ruth Kinney. "Mama," as she was affectionately called, was the fourth child; Griffin, Gordon, Joseph, and Mary all preceded her in death. She received her education in West Virginia and graduated from West Virginia State College in 1951, with a degree in music. She received a Master's Degree from the University of Maryland in Education. Marie was married to the late Herman W. Fortune on March 17, 1956. From this union four children were born. Marie and Herman came to Baltimore, Maryland because Herman had obtained employment with the Maryland Training School for Boys. She was employed in the Baltimore City Public School System where she taught different subjects. She retired as an educational specialist for special education. She received God at an early age and attended Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hanley, West Virginia. She has been a long time member of Wayland Baptist Church where she sang in the Sanctuary Choir and the Mass Choir. She was the former President of the Garrison Hill Community Association, Inc. She was presently serving as the Correspondence Secretary for this organization. She was the former secretary of the Greater Northwest Community Coalition. She was a long time member of AKA Sorority, and Project Garrison. She enjoyed singing, sewing and cooking for her family. She loved children especially those in her community. She started the Village for Children Program. She was a loving and giving person. She was definitely a child of God and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves to cherish her memory and love: five children, Lynne (Benjamin) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Bernice, Harold (Charlene), Barry (Aagala) and Lisa (Willie) all of Baltimore, Maryland; fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and friends. We thank God for He is good all the time. We thank Him for giving us a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother to love and share our lives with. We also thank Him for knowing when her pain got too hard to bear for giving her rest.The Family
