Marie E. Hartley

Marie Elizabeth Hartley, daughter of the late Lonnie and Euther Williams, was born on July 13, 1926 in Goldsboro, NC. She departed this life on October 15, 2016 after a lengthy illness. She began her Christian walk at Saint Mark Disciples of Christ Church, at a young age. As a child she was reared with her first cousins, Rufus, Lillie, and Luther Inman, whom she affectionately called her brothers and sister. She was a proud graduate of Dillard High School. During her high school years she met the love of her life, Floyd M. Hartley. On January 18, 1946, Marie and Floyd were married. After the birth of their first child, Lonnie "Skip", the family moved to Baltimore, MD. settling in the Cherry Hill section of the city. While there, Marie and Floyd expanded their family with the births of Denise and Floyd Darnell. The family worshipped during that time at Cherry Hill United Methodist Church. They later purchased a home in East Baltimore known as Federal Street. Once again the family grew with the births of Felecia and Kennard Q. Marie began working at Londontowne Manufacturing Co., then moving on to The Veterans Administration. Later she retired from Social Security Administration after 20 years of service as a Benefit Clerk. Marie and her family continued their Christian walk at Christ United Methodist Church, later becoming members at Milton Avenue Methodist Church where she sang on the choir. Continuing her Christian walk, she found a home at New Antioch Church under the leadership of Bishop Orlando A. Wilson. There, Marie chaired the Senior Saints, was ordained a deacon, and when her health was failing, she was appointed Honorary Deacon. Marie Elizabeth Hartley, found enormous joy in serving others and traveling. She fulfilled a lifetime dream when she traveled to Hawaii. One of her other accomplishments was attaining Toast Master status. The many gatherings at her home were reflections of her loving spirit. She cooked, she danced, she sang , she told jokes and she loved the Lord. Anyone who ever visited her home on Federal Street left with a smile, a word of wisdom and Marie's brown bag, after having been fed like kings and queens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd M. Hartley and she leaves to mourn, her children, Lonnie, Denise, Floyd D., Felecia and Kennard Q. Her grandchildren, Guy, Jay, Kelly, Ryan, Kennard D., Terrell, Stephanie and Danielle, 17 Great grandchildren and 4 Great great grandchildren, a daughter-in-law (Natalie), a special cousin, (Doretha Batten) and a host of other relatives and friends. The Hartley Family gratefully acknowledges the many kind and beautiful expressions of love shown to our mother during her lifetime.
