Marie Arline Cannon

Marie Arline Cannon, formerly of Charlotte, North Carolina wife of William Alphonso Cannon, died Friday, October 15, 2010, at the Gilchrist Hospice Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The oldest of four children, she was born in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Rev. Armster Jackson Ryans and Arline Jones Ryans. She was formerly married to the late Rev. William DeForrest Baxter, and to this union were born three sons, William DeForrest, Jr., Richard Ryans, and Leonard Tillman. Marie attended Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina and graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was an avid lover of science and shared that enthusiasm with students in her classroom. Marie was a 7th grade teacher at East Union High School, and retired from Indian Trail Elementary School, both in Union County, North Carolina. Her love for God was evident by the life she lived. An Elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA, she served in many capacities. Marie was a former Sunday school teacher and Moderator of Presbyterian Women in the Catawba Presbytery. After moving to Baltimore, she remained involved serving as Moderator of Presbyterian Women at both Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Baltimore Presbytery. Marie found much joy singing in the church choir and serving as a member of the Synod of Mid-Atlantic. For her dedication and commitment to Presbyterian Women at every level, she received two honorary lifetime membership pins which she wore proudly. Marie ‘s community involvement included the following: President of the Wren-Lane Parking Association; member of the 13ettes Club, Charlotte, North Carolina; active member of the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Quettes of Baltimore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Leonard Baxter, brothers John and James Ryans, sister Elizabeth Ryans, and daughter, Ingrid Cannon. Surviving are her husband of twenty-three years, William Cannon of the home; son, William Baxter of the home; daughter-in-law, Delcia Harper-Baxter of Sumter, South Carolina; granddaughter, Marlena Baxter of Winston Salem, North Carolina; stepson, Avery (Sherri) Cannon of Kansas City, Missouri; grandson Avery Cannon Jr. of Kansas City Missouri; granddaughter, Topaz (Lloyd) Frazier of Baltimore, Maryland; sisters-in- law Sarah Cannon and Cynthia Cannon of Boston, Massachusetts; Truly Ryans of Raleigh, North Carolina; brothers- in- law Obie Cannon of Boston, Massachusetts; Cecil (Jean) Cannon of Baltimore, Maryland; nephew, Major Jim (Crystal) Ryans of Jacksonville, North Carolina; niece, Denese Davis Houston of Charlotte, North Carolina; and a host of other family and friends.
