Marcia C. Martin

MARCIA CARR MARTIN was born in Baltimore, Maryland, as the first child of the marriage union of the late Rosa Lee Hawkins and Henry V. Carr, Jr. She was raised in a multi-generational household and close-knit West Baltimore community where she began her walk with the Lord at Union Memorial United Methodist Church. Upon graduating with honors from Edmondson High School, she received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. Her life was defined by tireless service to others, delivered with a heart filled with boundless generosity and joy, and always with a smile. Marcia received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education from Morgan State University, where she met her former spouse Dale E. Martin and had her daughter Sherry. While raising Sherry, Marcia earned a Masters of Science in Administration and Supervision from Morgan State, and taught and mentored generations of middle and high school students in a four-decade career with Baltimore City Public Schools. In the evenings, it was not uncommon to find her teaching a wide range of adult education classes to diverse communities including ex-offenders, non-traditional learners, and professionals seeking to turn over a new leaf. After retiring as Assistant Principal at Mergenthaler Vocational- High School, Marcia continued her life of service. For example, she was a Silver Star for over 25-year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Omega Chapter, and decades-long member of the Pan-Hellenic Council of Baltimore. She was always available to lend a helping hand to friends and family,sharing their joy in life's victories and providing kind support over its hurdles. She regularly worshipped at the Empowerment Temple A.M.E. Church of Baltimore. Marcia, an avid reader, enjoyed any movie featuring African-Americans, crafting, traveling and long conversations and going out to eat with her many friends, sorority sisters, and her daughter. She was joy to be around; she laughed loudly and often; and it was infectious. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Dr. Sherry L. Martin of Washington DC; brother, Magistrate Judge Henry V. Carr III of St. Thomas, USVI; and a host of cousins, sorority sisters, and an immense community of lifelong friends.
