Mamie Street

MAMIE E. STREET, the daughter of the late Gussie Pumpy and Harlee Stewart, was born April 2, 1921 in Greenwood, SC. She departed this life on June 25, 2007 around 9:00 p.m. when she decided to “Let Go and Let God Take Over”.She went to elementary and high school in Baltimore City and worked for a time for the Pennsylvania Rail Road. She went on to work for J. G. Reynolds Packing Company and then Hawaiian Punch until its closing.Mamie loved to fish and would leave home at 3:00 a.m. to catch the bus across the bay bridge. Mamie met and married Benjamin Street in the 1940’s. She loved people and liked to be in the midst of a crowd; where children were, that was where she wanted to be.Mamie joined Bibleway after the passing of her mother.She leaves to mourn her passing: a devoted sister, Lillie Ervin; godson, Gregory “Poochie” Page; loving children, Barbara (Melvin), Marcia (Jackie), Rodney, Reggie (Nannie) and Michael; a church full of nieces and nephews for she was “Aunt Mamie” to them all; a lifetime friend. Mrs. Rose Joe who worked with her for over forty years; Elizabeth Redd who worked at Southern Hotel Operations; her nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.Some people come into our lives and quickly go Some stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same.Your loving sister,Lillie ErvinMiss Street,As children, we cherished the attention you lavished on us during all those summers we spent with you and Daddy in the big city. We had become country kids, so we lined up like baby chicks to follow you on field trips to Dutch Country, the zoo, picnics and the parks. On Sunday, we sat beside you, soaking up the sights and songs of multiple worship services. We remember how readily you shared a smile, a few kind words with people we met on every journey. To you, a stranger was simply a potential friend. We laughed at your stories about fishing adventures, especially the part about all the fish you spared because you already had so many. And we loved those lazy days on the front porch where only the aroma of your freshly baked bread and the promise of more Hawaiian Punch could draw us inside. Decades have slipped away, but we’ve held on to the wonderful memories. We were blessed to have you in our lives, and we will especially miss your wisdom and your wit.
