Mamie Lee

One hundred and four years ago on Christmas day (191l), ia Baltimore City; Mamie Elizabeth Marshall was born; the youngest of three daughters of John Herry and Mamie Elizabsth Marshall. She, along with her sisters, the late Irene Smithand Jessie Taylor, was educated in the City's public schools, an{grqed within her heritage of St. Lucia West lndies with her family. As a young gir*frffid stay at t&e knee of her father (Pappy) and assist him in his bmbershop. She was cdir{irmed in the Episeopal faith over 75 years ago and thrcughout her life worshiped at St James Episcopal Church. Following her graduation from Douglass High School, she attended CoppinNormal (now Coppin State University) where she received her Teacher's Certification. Upoa receip of her Certificate in 1931, Mamie MarehaXI retumed tg Baltimore City's School system to tsach elemenary school, and children with special needs. During this time, Mamie Marshall Kelly spent her slunmers and most of her weekeads at her home (named Kellmar), near Annapolis, Md., on the Severn River. There she entertained her family and friends. We all had a great time boating, fishing, crabbing and swimmiag. She enjoyed gardening, so &esh vegetables and fruits were served with the great meals. She later eamed her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from fu{organ State University. Then, Manfe Marshall Kelly atteuded New York University, where she received her lVIasters' degree in Education. She would tell stories of how much fun she and her classmates would have while traveling on the train to and from New York City, while she pursued her degree. When not teaching, she loved spendiag surnmers in NJ, with family and &iends. She was joined in marriage to Williara "Billy'' Lee. The two traveled and socialized with family and friends, as &eir home was full of fun and laughter" They were inseparable until Billy's passing. As an active member cf St James Episcopal Church, Mamie worked with the Alter Guild, sang in the Rose Choir and was a lifetime member of St Martha's Guild- After 40 years of teaching, Mamie retired. She then b"gan her second career as a dental assistant. Mamie continued to work, until well in her eighties. Also, she worked as volunteer in the glft shop at Boa SecourtHospital, and was proudly involved in her neighborhood'scommunityeveats. ;i ln later years, on Christmaso Mamie would spend her birthdays surrounded by farnily and friends- We, the family, gratefully thank all the loving hands that cared for our Aunt Mamie, especially the staffs at Emerald Estates, Brookdale Senior LiVing and Augsburg Village.
