Mamie E. Perry

It took Mamie 91 years, 2 months and 7 days to complete God’s transformation into her new and improved heavenly body. At 2:00 p.m. pm December 26, 2005 the transformation was complete and the Lord said you are ready Mamie and He called her home.Mamie Elizabeth Green was born on October 17. 1914 to George and Genevieve Green in Lancaster, Virginia and was one of twelve children. While Mamie was a child, she worked the family farm and was always fond of gardening and continued it in adulthood with her sisters and brothers. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland when she was a young adult and met Mr. Bernard Perry, a truck driver. It took Barney only four month of dating to know that this beautiful lady was for him so he married Mamie on April 17. 1941. And boy could she cook, I’m sure that had something to do with it. They were married for 43 years before he expired. She worked as a housekeeper and later as a custodial worker for GSA (General Services Administration) before she retired. Mamie and Barney adopted two children in the 1950’s, Linda, who is now Linda Walker who gave her two beautiful grandchildren Latrice Brunson and Terrance Smith and Thelma, who is now Thelma Askew who gave Mamie her son-in-law, Jerome Askew who she was so proud and fond of.Mamie was a member of the Eastern Star, Excelsior 41 lodge and for more than 25 years a member of the First Baptist Church of Cherryhill where she brought her girls up in the church. She sent her girls to Sunday school and every Sunday they watched Mamie sing her heart out on the choir. Mamie was always answering the call of need, raising her two grandchildren Latrice and Terrance and taking care of her husband and several of her sisters and brothers while they were terminally ill and is survived by only two of the 12, Elizabeth Brown and William Green. She also has three great-grandchildren Cory, Joshua and Aayliyah and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.Those of us who affectionately knew Mamie will always remember her standing in the kitchen cooking those collard greens, potato salad and pig feet and all those wonderful cakes and pies. Even while she was being transformed right before our eyes Mamie still had joy and would serve up a smile that would break down the grumpiest person. She will be missed especially by everyone who was afforded the opportunity to meet her.
