Major Nelson Martin

Major Nelson Martin, son of the late Phil and Ruth Martin was born in Fluvanna County, Virginia on December 27, 1915. He was the 3rd child of 11 children. He answered the call of the Almighty and quietly slipped away on April 2, 2002. He was educated in the Virginia school system and was known for his unique wit and wonderful sense of humor. In his young adult years, he married and out of that union, three children were born Dorothy, Phillip Nelson and Lewis. As a young man providing for his family, he worked as a craftsman at a Mill manufacturing barrels. He was a member of Union Baptist church, where he dedicated to serving the Lord. Later in adulthood he moved to Baltimore, Maryland and secured a job at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard and worked there until retirement. During that time, he married and out of that union one daughter, Sheila (lovingly known as “sister”) was born. In later years, Gwendolyn Jackson came into his life and became his wife in 1970. With this union, he gained a loving and devoted wife, and five caring and supportive stepchildren, Leonard, Sally, Samuel, Brian, and Gwendolyn (Jackie). Major and Gwen enjoyed taking short trips and visiting family and friends. As members of the Martin Luther King United Methodist Church, they both became close to the members and enjoyed attending Sunday services. Through the years as the health of both of them began to become a challenge, they each took seriously, the responsibility of caring for each other.He leaves a family who is thankful to God for allowing them to have such blissful memories: a devoted wife, Gwendolyn Martin; four children, Dorothy Bradshall, Phillip Nelson Martin, Lewis Martin (deceased) and Sheila Martin; five step-children, Leonard Jackson, Samuel Jackson, Sally Alston, Brian Jackson and Gwendolyn “Jackie” Smith; three sisters, Inez Love, Ida Christian, Thelma Casselle; three brothers, Phil, Jr., Charlie and George Martin; one aunt, Adeline Anderson; twenty grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, cousins and a host of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
