Mae Hazel Owens

Mae Hazel Evans Owens entered this world in Hoke County, North Carolina on May 26, 1929 to the late Elsie Sinclair McFayden and the late Rosa Lee Evans. Mae received her place with her heavenly father on July 23, 2016. Mae received her educational background in the Hoke County School System and later attended high school in Fayetteville, North Carolina. After leaving school, Mae worked at the Silver Grill Café in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In 1956, Mae and Eugene Owens were joined in marriage and later moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1958. To this union five sons were born. At a young age, Mae accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Upon moving to Baltimore, Mae was a long time member of New Union Baptist Church, until she was unable to attend due to health issues. Mae worked several jobs including the Greyhound Bus Company, Social Security Administration and The Eatery. In 1989, Mae retired. After her retirement, Mae decided to become a senior aide at the nearby elementary school, where she would go into the classroom and assists the teachers. Mae received special recognition awards for parent participation, and The City Council of Baltimore for her participation in the annual “Senior May Day” Celebration, signed by Shelia Dixon. Mae loved cooking family meals, listening to gospel music, dancing at a young age, shopping and traveling along with completing crossword puzzles and having long conversations with her grandchildren. Mae had four children who preceded her in death, Reggie, Fred, Vernon and Shirley; three grandsons, Anthony, Ernest and Vernon Jr.; great-grandson, Irving Jr.; four brothers, Lynn, June, James and Eric. She leaves to cherish her fond and loving memory: two daughters, Gladys (CW), and Diane; four sons, Michael (Sandy), Gregory, Charles (Darlene) and Kenny; twenty-five grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rebecca of North Carolina, Catherine of Baltimore, Carolyn (Rabbit) of Baltimore; brother, David of New York; best friend and traveling partner Mrs. Evelyn Hilard; and host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
