Mae Ella Miller

Obituary Mae Ella Washington Miller, 90, of Richmond, Virginia, transitioned to her heavenly home on Sunday, August 9, 2026. She was born on August 1, 1936, in Bishopville, South Carolina, to the late Lucille and Luther Josey, Sr. She was the beloved granddaughter of the late Louvenia and Vander Washington, with whom she shared a close and loving relationship. Mae grew up surrounded by family and was especially close to her aunts, who held a special place in her heart. Mae Ella was the second oldest of ten siblings. From an early age, family was at the center of her life, and the love she received growing up became the same love she poured into her own family throughout the years. She accepted Christ at a young age at St. Mark Baptist Church in Sumter, South Carolina. She had a deep love for God and was never shy about praising Him. She would often say, “God is a good God and put our trust in Him.” Mae Ella later moved to Richmond, Virginia, with her husband, Henry Copeland, where she built her life and raised her four children, Brenda, Robert “Bobby,” Debbie, and Reese Sr. She joined Cedar Street Baptist Church of God, where she was a member for 68 years. She was a devoted mother who loved her children deeply. She cared for her son Bobby with unwavering love and devotion until his passing. Later in life, Mae Ella married Ben Miller, and they shared 20 years of marriage. Mae Ella dedicated 28 years of her life to MCV Hospital before retiring. She was known for her hard work, dedication and commitment. Mae Ella was preceded in death by her beloved son, Robert “Bobby” Copeland, and two of her beloved grandsons, Matthias “Shang” Washington and Robert “Tweety” Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughters, Brenda Champ and Debbie Burchett (Harold); son, Reese Washington Sr. (Browyn); grandchildren, Reese Jr., LaSheka, Juanita (devoted), Tiffany, Quinton, Joseph, Princess, and Gilneshia “Poodie” (Tony); brother, Eddie Lee Josey (Janie); sister, Lillie Mae DuBose, 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends. Mae Ella was known for her warm personality and welcoming spirit. She enjoyed laughter, dancing, and spending time with others. She had a natural ability to make people feel comfortable, accepted, and loved. She was expressive, humorous, and full of character, often sharing sayings and wisdom that her family continues to cherish and remember. Mae Ella Washington Miller will be remembered with love and respect as a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, family member, and friend. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
