Lydia Groom

LYDIA ADDISON-GROOM, fondly known as Dude, daughter of the late Clinton and Matilda Addison, was born on October 19,1921, in Pinesville, South Carolina, the oldest of five children. Her brothers, Capers and Samuel preceded her to eternal rest. Lydia was named after her late aunt, Lydia Jefferson Dingle.At time to sleepLydia fought a good fight and made a victorious entrance into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, December 8, 2007Lydia received her primary education in the public school system of S.C. While in high school, Lydia became a Sunday School Teacher at Day Dawn Baptist Church in Pinesville; which was founded by her grandfather the late Rev. John Jefferson. After graduating from High School, she went to Charleston, S.C. and studied Cosmetology. From there she went to South Carolina State College in Orangeburg and received a degree in Home Economics. From there she went to Morris College in Sumpter, S.C. Lydia was a Harriett Tubman and a Sojourner Truth to all she met and grew to know. She taught that one mistake does not mean it's over, that no one is better than you, but you are not better than anyone either, that everyone is the same, to always follow your dreams and that silence can also be golden. She is remember by her sisters as always humming. Walk with me Lord, Walk with me Lord, Walk with me while I am on this treaious journey. I want Jesus to walk with me. Lydia had a very calm disposition and never raised her voice any higher than a whisper. She loved the Lord and always took a servitiute position in the church.A time to loveLydia met David Groom while at Morris College and shortly after, they married and relocated to Baltimore, MD. Later, she was joined by her newly wed, baby sister, Pearl, who married David's brother. Lydia had seven children who she loved so much. One, Matilda Josetta Alexander, preceded her to eternal life. Lydia and David resided close to Morgan State College and began the process of opening their home to many of the young men and women who came from S.C. to attend Morgan. She began to advocate for others and became very active in political issues in her city and community.A time to share...Lydia was employed at the post office while living in S.C. She also operated a beauty shop within her parent's home for a short period of time When she moved to Baltimore, she worked at was once known as Bay College and worked with her husband at the restaurant he opened. She was a member of the Coldspring Montebello Association and the Build for Humanity Association.A time to say good-bye...Lydia leaves to cherish her memory: 3sons, Dr. Franklin J. Addison, Samuel Groom and Nikita Groom 3daughters, Zula Cruthfield, Rev. Hattie P.Groom and Gloria Johnson; 2sons-in-laws, Raymond Crutchfield and Elmore Johnson; I daughter-in-law, Carolyn Addison; 2widow sisters, Ms. Victoria Middleton of S.C. and Ms. Pearl Groom of MD; 6grandchildren, I great grandson and a host of other relatives and friends.
