Lucinda V. Hayes

LUCINDA VIRGINIA GRANT HAYES, 86, of Baltimore, Maryland went home to be with her Savior, Jesus, on Sunday, October 6, 2013. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters and brother, her husband (LeRoy Hayes Jr.), her eldest son (Rev. LeRoy Hayes III), and her oldest grandson (Minister Gary L. Hayes Jr.). Lucinda was born in Charleston, South Carolina on October 2, 1927. She was the sixth child of eight born to Clinton and Earlee Grant, and the last to depart this life. Lucinda graduated from Allen University, with a teaching degree, in 1950. She married LeRoy Hayes Jr. in Estill, SC on May 20, 1952. In 1954 their firstborn son, LeRoy (Ronnie) Hayes III, was born in Ridgeland, SC. Soon afterwards the family moved to Baltimore, MD. In 1963, as a guard in the “cottages”, Lucinda began her career at the Women's Correctional Institute in Jessup, MD. As opportunities arose, she was able to use her teaching degree to help inmates achieve their high school equivalency (GED). She received her Master’s Degree from Coppin State College in 1973, evidence of her determination to continue to excel in the realm of education. She retired from Jessup after 30 years of service, but she did not take a hiatus from helping others. She remained active in church (Forest Park Community) giving support to a plethora of Christian organizations, causes, individuals, and family needs. Psalm 71:14-18 14 But I will hope continually, and will praise you yet, more and more. 15 My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness and Your Salvation all the day, for I do not know their limits. 16 I will go in the strength of the Lord God; I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only. 17 O God, You have taught me from my youth, and to this day I declare Your wondrous works. 18 Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your Strength to this generation, Your Power to everyone who is to come. She fulfilled these words with great grace from the Lord to the joy and encouragement of her family, and as can be attested from the list of progeny and relations that follows: Lucinda is survived by: four children, Bernard (Nancy) Hayes, Gary (Desiree) Hayes, Ingrid (Deano) Burrell and Patricia (Dwayne) Hooper; and twelve grandchildren, Christia Scott, Matthew Hayes, Shedana Agent, Zion Hayes, Shaina Hayes, Dwayne Hooper Jr., Clarke Hooper, Grant Hooper, Angela Shady, Amy Norvell, Heather Dixon and Tiffany Jamison; and twelve great-grandchildren, Deche Hayes, Isaiah Hayes, Mark Fleming, Diamonique Agent, Denzell Agent, Elijah Hayes, Jeremiah Hayes, Matthew Peterson, Lauren Shady, Kayla Shady, Cooper Shady, and Sydney Dixon; and one great-great-granchild, Zaire Eli Agent. Also included are: a loving nephew/son Louis McKnight and son Rick Bruggenwirth; great uncle, William Huggins Jr.; four sisters-in-law, Alice Anderson (Kingstree, SC), Emily Hayes (Mullins, SC), Victoria Glasco (Mullins, SC), Hilda (Charles) Conner (Florence, SC); two brothers-in-law, Ralph Hayes (Mullins, SC) and Clarence Jackson (Baltimore, MD); devoted nieces, nephews, precious cousins, other relatives, extended family, and many supportive and caring church family members.
