Lovely V. Fickling

Lovely V. Fickling, son of the late Johnnie & Katie Fickling, was born on November 5, 1919 in Denmar, South Carolina. He departed this life on November 29, 2001. He received his education in Denmark, S.C. He was in the Army (World War II) and served four years. After honorable discharge, and returning to S.C. for a while, he relocated in Baltimore, MD and he made Baltimore his home. Lovely worked for Acme Warehouse for 19 years, and was Shop Steward for the company as well. He then was elected as Business Agent & Trustee for Teamsters Local # 355, where he served 20 years, and retired from the Teamsters in February, 1984. Lovely, loved to bowl, fish, hunt, play golf and loved his vegetable garden in the backyard in the summer. He also loved the wrestling sport that was seen on television. Lovely would be in front of the television anytime the wrestling match was on. He was a true friend and a devoted family man. Lovely served as a faithful Deacon at Perkins Square Baptist Church, for over 55 years, he also was a member of the Senior Usher Board for over 50 years as well. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board for many years, and he served as President of the Deacon’s conference of Baltimore & Vicinity. He was an instructor of the Baptist Training Union, the Church School, Mann’s Memorial Ministry (for over 50 years), and active member of Manpower Ministry until his health prevented him from attending the monthly prayer breakfast. He leaves to mourn: his wife, Avis M. Fickling (they wee married for 25 years on July 9th , 2001); two sons, Joseph and Levorne; two daughters, Lynette and Fonda Kim Fickling; one daughter-in-law, Geraldine; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one sister, Vera Battle of S.C.; six brothers, Callie (Fannie), Mike (Ogreta) and Calvin (Jeanette) all of S.C. Theodore (Glennie Mae), Jeremiah (Dorothy) of Baltimore, MD and James (Mae) of Los Angeles, California. He also leaves to mourn sisters-in-law, Gertrude Fickling, Margaree Fickling and Theresa (Dennis) Knox, mother-in-law, W.Rose Montaque; Eloise Birdsong whom he raised as one of his own children; nieces, nephews, god-children and a host of other relatives and friends.
