Lou Doris Spencer

Lou Doris Simpson Spencer, daughter of the late Carlton and Alberta Simpson, was born on June 29, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland. Lou departed this life on Friday, June 14, 2002 after a short illness. Lou received her education in the Baltimore City publicschools. She graduated from Douglass High School in June, 150. Upon graduating from high school, she served in the United States Navy as a nursing Assistant until being honorably discharged on July 10, 1953. After serving in the military, Lou met and married bob Spencer of New York City. From this union they were blessed with two children, Brian J. Spencer and Kyle A. Saunders. Lou was employed at University of Maryland Hospital, Lutheran Hospital, and Sinai Hospital as Nursing Assistant for many years. She and husband, Bob, co-owned a dry cleaning business from 1966 – 1975. During her later years, the Baltimore City Department of Social Services Medical Assistance Division employed Lou for more than twenty years until her retirement in august, 1994. Lou was a faithful member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 263 and the 1950 Douglass High School Alumnus Association. Lou Accepted Christ at an early age and became an active member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church under Pastor Franklin. She faithfully served on many committees, choirs, and discipleship groups for over twenty-five years. She enjoyed helping people, cooking, photography, shopping, music, and especially traveling. Lou regularly traveled to Jamaica, went on many cruises, and took several cross-country bus trips. She loved seeing the world and meeting new people.Lou was a “road scholar” at heart, and she loved to debate and interacts with persons from around the world. But most of all, she loved her family and enjoyed having them over for big meals. She especially took great joy in her relationship with her grandchildren, Jennifer and Elliott Saunders, who brought her much happiness. Lou was a real “people person” and never passed up the opportunity to laugh, joke, and encourage anyone and everyone who came across her path. To know Lou was to love her. Everyone was her friend. The life and memory of Lou shall be remembered by her husband, Bob Spencer; children, Brian Spencer and Kyle Saunders; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Elliott Saunders; one brother, Ralph Simpson; one sister, Betty Dorsey, who preceded her in death; one sister-in-law, Christine Simpson; three aunts, Flora Simpson (North Carolina), Ruth Simpson and Louise Clegg; three nieces, Renee Lewis (New York), Leslie Harris, and Cicely Simpson; three nephews, Darryl Simpson, Daniel Dorsey, Jr., and Kevin Harris; one son-in-law, Reverend Mark Saunders; one great niece, Morgan Harris; two great nephews, Clifton Dawson, Jr., (godson), and Malcolm Simpson; loyal caring cousins, Joe and Gilda Williamson (Silver Spring, MD); a host of other relatives and many devoted friends.
