Lillie V. Stewart

Lillie Vernell Brandon was born in Harmony, VA, to the late John Eddie and Elizabeth Brandon. Lillie moved to Baltimore in 1943, when she was four years old. She attended Banneker Elementary School in Fairfield, MD and went on to Booker T. Washington Jr. High School and Carver Vocational Technical Senior High School in Baltimore City. She received her Associate of Arts Degree in Human Services in June 1978.She married Henry Stewart February 11, 1961, and was blessed with six beautiful and wonderful children who truly loved their mother-nothing was too good for her. While she and Henry divorced in November 1972, they remained friends. She raised her children with the assistance of her family. They grew up to be respectable, honest, hard working, and decent adults, who made their mother proud. In January 1985, she started working at the Waxter Adult Day Care Center (C.A.R.E) taking care of the mentally, handicapped, and frail elderly. In February 1995, she was promoted to a recreation Leader II in Client Services where she organized and planned trips and special events for the seniors. Lil loved to travel anywhere and everywhere. She also planned her own trips so others could accompany her on her many excursions. She received numerous awards and certificates for her outstanding work.She attended First Baptist Church in Fairfield, MD as a child. She was later baptized at Mt. Sinai Church of Christ in November 1989. In 1992, she rededicated her life to Christ at Grace Baptist Church until she encountered problems with transportation. She then joined Zion Baptist Church of Christ in Dundalk, MD, where she volunteered as an Announcement Clerk. Her final place of worship was the First Apostolic Faith Church, where she attended until her illness in April.Lil, as she was affectionately known, gave unselfishly and generously to everyone who came in contact with her.She leaves to cherish her memories her children: Sharon, Cheryl, Kevin, Derrick and Darryl (twins, and Deborah; Christ-adopted daughter, Shavon Rhodes; two sons-in-law, Douglas McCray and Samuel Ruffin; one daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Stewart; four granddaughters, Tanisha Stewart, Jillian Boutwell, M. Jasmine Bauer, and Tiara McCray; four sisters, Rosa Johnson, Dr. Mary Kimble, Minister Annie Maitland and Marie Savoy Brandon; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Maitland and Melvin McAdory. She also leaves to mourn eight beautiful nieces and four handsome nephews and their children; two aunts, Lucy McGhee and Helen Featherstone; and a host of cousins and friends. Her very good friends were Sarah Harris (who was like a sister to her). Dorothy Wilson, Joann Green, Ruby Glover and Winifred Mulcare; her Water co-workers and her Seniors and her buddies who regularly rode the bus to and from work with her.
