Lillie N. Myers

LILLIE N. MYERS, devoted daughter of the late Edward C. Nelson and Janie Burgess Nelson, was born January 29, 1930 in Sumter, South Carolina. She quietly departed this life on Saturday March 10, 2018. At an early age, Lillie was christened at the John Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church, now John Wesley United Methodist Church, by the late Reverend William H. Dean. She remained a faithful member of John Wesley United Methodist Church until her failing health prevented her from attending. She received her early education in the Baltimore City Public School System and furthered her education obtaining advanced degrees from Morgan State, Loyola University and Johns Hopkins. Lillie was a devoted and caring principal at two local middle schools where she gave her time and talent, encouraging her students and teachers alike. She met and married the love of her life, the late James E. Myers, on February 1, 1964. They enjoyed forty-one wonderful years of marriage. Lillie instantly became step-mother to James W. Myers (Janet), Charlotte Wortham (deceased) and Betty Marshall. Lillie was the oldest of five children. Two brothers, Jonathan and James Nelson, preceded her in death. She loved to sing and play the piano and organ. Music was one of her many passions. She became lifelong friends with legendary pianist Eubie Blake and noted composer Noble Sissle. Lillie led a very active social life and was a member of several organizations to included Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, The Patapsco River Chapter Links Incorporated, Les Grande Dames Club, the Baltimore County Chapter of The Pierians, and The Olton Singers just to name a few. She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted sister, Kathleen Green; brother, George Nelson of Colorado; devoted son, James Warren Myers (Janet); daughter, Betty Marshall; grandchildren, Shellae Worth Blackwell, Donna Marshall, Royce Marshall, Shann Wortham and Bria Myers; sisters and brothers, Betty Gibbs, Olin Alford, Vienna McNeal, Harold Alford and Hazel Jackson; special nieces and nephews, Alicia Myers (Calvin), Edward C. Myers, Barbara Green, Phillip A. L. Green, Patricia McCall (Vincent), Paula Small (Robert) Pamela Johnson, Marguerite McGlothin, Gwinda Jones; and a host of great-nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Lillie knew that all of her success in life is due to the Lord and her Christian upbringing at home and at church. Her motto was: "Don't let nobody turn you around." Lillie Myers was united in John Wesley United Methodist Church in August, 1935. From childhood she has been an integral part of the church and an active member, especially in the music ministry. She began her service as pianist and directress of the Children's Choir. Her outstanding activities at John Wesley included: Member of Junior Usher Board, President of Young People's Choir, Pianist/Organist for the Young People's Choir, Pianist/Organist for the Gospel Choir, Member of Senior Choir since 1947, Directress of Senior Choir, Vice President of Epworth League (Methodist Youth Fellowship - MYF), Youth Delegate to Youth Convocations, Member of Auditing committee, Church School Teacher, Soprano Soloist, Organist for Senior Choir, Member of the Music Committee, Elected member of the United Methodist Foundation Board of the Baltimore Conference and a Member of the Administrative Board.
