Lillian Mae Givens

Lillian Mae (Nickens) Givens, born on November 26, 1930, in King William County, Virginia, peacefully passed away on January 19, 2025. She was the third of four children born to Dorothy Mae Nickens and William Braxton. Lillian was raised in humble beginnings and grew up to be a woman known for her feisty spirit, unwavering determination, and the courage to speak her mind. She was never afraid of hard work and was dedicated to making a better way for her family. Lillian dedicated her life to Christ at an early age at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in King William County. She received her education in King William Public Schools, later continuing her studies in Richmond, Virginia, after relocating with her family at the age of 9. She later became a dedicated member of St. Paul’s Baptist Church. Throughout her life, Lillian worked tirelessly, beginning at a young age when she worked for the Boice and Beauford families. Later, she worked for Aunt Sarah’s Pancake House, where she eventually retired after 4 decades of service. Lillian was a proud member of the social club The Silhouettes, where she forged lasting friendships with Alice Marshall, the late Dorothy Olds, and the late Sarah Young. In addition to her work ethic, Lillian had a love for leisure and fun. She thoroughly enjoyed playing cards and frequently visiting casinos. She also played VA and MD lotteries and BINGO, where she enjoyed herself with family and friends. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Mae Nickens and William Braxton; her spouse, Horace Givens; her siblings, Frances Sookins, Linwood Nickens, and Dorothy Inez Nickens; her beloved son Jerry Givens; her loving Aunt Julia Garlick; and her great-grandsons, Torryn Burroughs, Jermon Givens-Hill, and Alex Jackson. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Niretta Booker (Ralph), Warren Givens Sr. (June), and Evelyn Givens; her daughter-in-law Sadie Givens; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends (Addie (Anne) Branch) who were touched by her love and spirit. Lillian Mae (Nickens) Givens will always be remembered for her hard work, love, joy, and determination. She wished for nothing more than for the family to stay close and treat one another with kindness. Those who knew her will carry her memory and the love she shared in their hearts forever. May Lillian rest in peace, and may her legacy continue to guide and inspire us all.
