Leslie Mechelle Smith-Clarke

Our beloved Leslie Mechelle Smith-Clarke departed this earthly world to receive her heavenly wings on July 10, 2026. She was a truly radiant beam of light, a devoted mother, sibling, aunt, cousin, and genuine friend whose bright spirit touched all whom she encountered. Born on December 5, 1966 in Richmond, VA to George & Lucille Anderson, she was lovingly raised by Robert “Pete” & Nannie Elaine Harris. She was preceded in death by both sets of parents, as well as her brothers Zachary and Eugene “Buck”, whom all have joyfully reunited with her in Heaven. At a very young age, Mechelle accepted Christ as her Lord & Savior as a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Richmond and dedicated her life to spreading the love of Jesus to all. Later in her adult life, she joined Speaking Spirit Ministries, where she became an avid member. A fearless warrior for Christ, she was relentless in sharing His Word through her testimonies of God’s grace and mercy, despite the many health challenges she bravely fought, both seen and unseen. As the Chief Prayer Warrior and Head Spiritual Ambassador of her family, Mechelle was always a shining example of God’s love for His children. Mechelle grew up in the Highland Park area and attended Jefferson-Huguenot-Wythe High School, where she received her formal education and excelled in the cosmetology program. After graduating, she began working at her mother’s salon as a beautician, where she remained for a number of years. Following her time at the salon, she continued exploring her talents in pursuit of a more exciting career path. She spent the next several years developing skills in the cleaning and housekeeping industries, working for various companies, before ultimately discovering her home: Bon Secours. There, she amassed over a decade of experience as a central sterile surgery prep technician, a job she genuinely loved and found fulfilling. She took much pride in her work, being an integral part of surgery operations at Bon Secours, and even trained other technicians on the ropes. It’s no wonder Mechelle found her calling in a field devoted to helping others; that’s just who she was! Mechelle was passionate about many things in life and spent her free time doing the things she enjoyed. Her favorite hobbies included: church events, fellowshipping with family and friends, tending to her garden, spending time with her pets—she LOVED animals of all kinds!—cooking, and community service. No matter what she was doing or where she was, her bright light radiated everywhere she went. Mechelle’s faith in God was anchored deep, and her relationship with Him was special to behold. No matter what circumstance she was going through, she always kept that beautiful smile on her face and held her head high, spreading Jesus’ love through her joy. She often talked about the many times God pulled her through and how she never doubted Him. Countless times, she surprised the doctors and medical staff with miraculous recoveries, one after the other. Unwavering and steadfast in her trust of the Lord, she was never afraid to face life, and she did it with such poise and grace. Mechelle was a beautiful treasure to this world, indeed a one-of-a-kind Queen, and that was instantly evident from the moment anyone met her. A true Servant’s Heart, she always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, even in the midst of her own storms. Mechelle would never hesitate to offer a listening ear, a hug, or a word of advice to anyone, using her personal testimonies as a source of inspiration and hope to others. And again, that’s just who she was! Mechelle leaves to cherish her many beautiful memories: her dearest one and only son, Claude Clarke III; her sister, Joyce (“Pookie)” Hicks; three brothers, Robert Taylor Jr., Bernard (“Cat”) Sneed, and Donnie Sneed; a longtime special friend and companion, James (“Junnie”) Harrell; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Mechelle’s loving personality, vibrant spirit, and radiant energy will be hugely missed, yet we are comforted by the fact that she is resting peacefully in the arms of Jesus. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who loved her, because that’s just who she was!
