Leon Harris

MR. LEON THOMAS HARRIS was born to the late Mrs. Nannie and the late Mr. Wiley Harris on January 7, 1937. At an early age Leon Thomas and his brother Richard left school to work the farm along with their parents. This was a great help and it allowed his sisters to stay in school. He eventually left Buckingham County, Va. to come to Baltimore, Md. where he took up residence with his aunt, the late Mrs. Sarah Glover and his cousin Mrs. Blanche Tina Cooper. Leon was employed by the Gray Concrete Company and was soon drafted into the U. S. Army where he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. He was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army. Once again he returned to work at Gray Concrete Co. He was always proud, honest and respected by his supervisors and fellow workers. He retired after thirty-eight years of service. Leon met and married Mrs. Carolyn Garrett Chapman. They were not blessed with any children of their own, however he raised his niece, Ms. Regina Harris, who preceded him in death. He also helped Carolyn raise her son, Michael James Chapman Sr. Leon loved the Lord and became a member of Pennsylvania Avenue A.M.E. Zion Church under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Dennis V. Proctor. He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife of twenty-six years, Mrs. Carolyn Garrett Chapman Harris; his son, Michael Chapman Sr.; a grandson, Master Michael Chapman Jr.; granddaughter, Miss Alleria Mariah Chapman; brother, Bishop Richard Harris; four sisters, Mrs. Francis Munford, Mrs. Mary Rison of New Jersey, Mrs. Virginia Mann and Mrs. Clara Smith of Baltimore; mother, Mrs. Elberta Harris; aunt, Mrs. Virginia Holeman of Buckingham County, Va.; four brothers-in-law, Mr. Carl Rison, Mr. Eugene Harris of New Jersey, Mr. James Kidd, Mr. Stanley Kidd of Baltimore; four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rhetta Harris, Mrs. Glenda Kidd, Mrs. Patricia Kidd Ryce, Mrs. Marion Elaine Garrett Williams; two devoted nephews, Stephen Harris of Baltimore, Md. and Mr. Gerard Harris of Washington, D.C.; a dear friend, Mr. Thomas Brown of Baltimore, Md.; a special friend, Mrs. Irishteen Thomas; his church family and a host of other relatives and friends.
