Laura Ann Rogers

Laura Ann Rogers, born March 5, 1918, in South Boston, Virginia, was the daughter of the late Richard Gerst and Susie Bailey. She departed this life on February 14, 2012 after a lengthy illness. Laura’s life reflected God and family. On August 15, 1936, Laura, known affectionately as “Ninnie”, was joined in Holy matrimony with her beloved spouse, help-mate and protector, the late Leroy A. Rogers. The union lasted three weeks short of fifty years, but even the departure from her husband’s earthly vessel could not break the bond they shared. Out of this union, nine children were born. Laura’s belief in God was beyond measure. She joined Cornerstone Church of Christ in 1970, and remained a faithful servant until 1986 when she joined Bethel A.M.E. and remained a devoted disciple and an active member until she could no longer attend due to failing health. Prior to joining Cornerstone and Bethel, Laura was a dedicated member at Second Baptist Church. She became an affiliate of the Eastern Star, Chapter 14, in 1963. Her unwavering belief in God, her strong sense of commitment to the organization and her ability to provide nurturance to all earned her a lifetime appointment as Mother of the Chapter (17) in 1976. She will especially be remembered as a humble soul who has made a tremendous impact through her infinite wisdom and abounding love. Left to cherish her memory: six children, Daniel Rogers (Mary Jacobs), Bessie L. Burger-Rogers, Ginger E. Chester, Leroy A. Rogers Jr., Ann M. Thomas and Gerald A. Rogers; four grandchildren raised by Leroy and Laura, Larry T. Wilson, Shirley R. Erwin, Alisa C. Toles and Angela Simpson; twenty-three grandchildren; sixty-one great-grandchildren and forty great-great grandchildren; one son-in-law, James Thomas; two daughters-in-law, Patricia Rogers and Rosalyn Rogers; one brother, James M. Bailey; one sister-in-law; five nieces; two nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Laura was preceded in preceded in death by her husband, Leroy A. Rogers; three children, Sally, Rosetta and Lareau; one brother, Theodore Bailey; one granddaughter, Alisa C. Toles; three grandsons, Rodney and Lionel Rogers and Lamonte Sherman; two sons-in-law, Charles H. Burger and Thomas M. Chester; and one daughter-in-law, Barbara A. Rogers.
