Laney Mae Young

In January, 1943 Laney Mae Young was born to the late Jeffrey & Rosalee Connor. She was the sixth of nine children and lived most of her life in Rockaway Beach, NY., where she received her early education and religious training. She attended P.S. 42 Queens and Far Rockaway High School. Laney met and married the late Joseph E. Young, Sr. and to this union was born 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. Laney raised her children with great love and determination. She nurtured and taught them the great principles of life, working hard and maintaining integrity. Her sense of humor was known to most people who came in contact with her. Some of her greatest pastimes were puzzles, scrabble, words with friends and games or activities that would challenge the mind. She was often hard to beat at many of these games. After high school Laney went to work various jobs and later decided to pursue a nursing career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a very dedicated nurse who was passionate about her patients and providing excellent care to those in her care for over 40 years. In Rockaway Beach she worked as a Charge Nurse at Peninsula Hospital, Resort and Lawrence Nursing Homes, just to name a few. In 1997 Laney relocated to Richmond, Virginia where she continued her career as a Charge Nurse, working in a few of the local nursing homes until she retired in 2004. She spent her latter days nurturing and enjoying her family, grandchildren, and her great grandchild, all of whom she loved deeply. Laney was preceded in death by her husband, the late Joseph E. Young Sr.; parents, Jeffrey & Rosalee Connor; grandson, Stephen Micheaux Young; 2 sisters, Rose Marie Finley and Rebecca Stancell; and 1 brother, Ernest Connor. She leaves to treasure her memory her children: 3 daughters-Joanmarie Fraser (Desmond), Janice Harmon (Leron), and Jamie Young; 3 sons -Joe (Elizabeth), Jason, and Jeremy Young; 8 grandchildren: Andrew, Kyle, Micaela & Elijah Harmon, Shaniya, Candace, Derrick and Connor Young and 1 great-grandchild, Rylie Harmon; 3 sisters: Ruby, Eunice & Lorraine Connor; 2 brothers: Jeffrey & John Connor; a host of sisters-in-law (3 beloved) Joan (Dot) Adams, Anne and Barbara (Shane) Connor and brothers-in-law; 2 godchildren: Jacqui Llano and Derrell Stancell, Jr.; 1 uncle; other loved ones close to her heart include, Gwen Finley, LaShawnda Singleton, Dawn Martin and Ashley Ellis; a great host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
