Ms. Kensey Vonel Woingust "Candy"

On July 25, 1942, Charlie and Ada Lewis celebrated the birth of their only baby girl, KENSEY VONELL, ‘CANDY.’ Candy grew up in Elizabethtown, North Carolina surrounded in love by her three brothers, Legrande, Frank and Herold. Being the only girl, of course she was a natural tomboy. Known for climbing trees, Candy rivaled with the toughest of boys. In 1956, the family packed up and headed North, settling in Baltimore, Maryland. Upon arrival, Candy’s glowing personality a friendship with Betty Coley. They became lifelong friends. It was Betty who later introduced Candy to her husband, Rick Woingust. From this union, their love child was born, (the 60’s) Sherrie. It was the birth of Sherrie’s daughter Nickole, whom Candy loved with all her heart, that brought her second blessing. Then in 2004, Candy experience a love like none other, the birth of her great-grandson, Jeffery. She promptly retired after many years in sales to take care of her Jeffery, her “Boo.” Jeffery shared a special bond with his Mama. He considered her his best friend. Through the years Candy acquired a lot of loved ones. Among them her girls from modeling school (The Ebony Queen), her downtown family and friends on Flowerton Road, notably her chosen sister, Sarah Bass. Everyone who met Candy absolutely adored her. Candy lived with a passion for life. She enjoyed preparing home cooked meals and it was nothing for her to get out of bed and fry chicken at 2a.m. Famous for her potato salad, her soulful cooking will truly be missed. Candy had a great sense of fashion. Often referred to as a “Diva,” Candy couldn’t help but to be the life of the party. She was always picture perfect when she stepped on the scene. Whether quietly reading a booking, traveling or taking a ride on her bus trip, Candy had both an impeccable sense of style and an immaculate sense of love. After a brief illness, God called our Angel to eternal rest on August 2, 2011. Her infectionous smile and laughter will echo in our hearts forever. To honor her memory, Candy leaves her daughter, Sherrie Woingust; her adoring granddaughter, Nickole McGuire-Well; her very special great-grandson, Jeffery Wells; Sr.; three sister-in-law, Anne Lewis, Bernice Lewis and Eulalia Oliver; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
