Kelvin Jesse Hurdle

Our beloved, Kelvin Jesse Hurdle, was born in Richmond,Va., on March 29,1955 to Jesse and Louise Hurdle. He passed away at home in Richmond, September 9, 2008. He ispreceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Carl Washington.Kelvin is a 1973 graduate of Maggie L. Walker. In high school, Kelvin was very athletic. He played football,baseball,and ran track.He received a B.S. degree in 1977 from Virginia State University,where he majored in Geology. He continued his education at the University of South Carolina and earned a Master’s in Geology in 1980. Kelvin’s happiest times were spent with his high school sweetheart,dearest friend and wife,Sylvia Ford,whom he joined in marriage April 7,1983. He and Sylvia shared a special bond and friendship that was unique and full of joy and laughter. Kelvin worked for several oil companies in Denver,Colorado andExxon/Mobil in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Houston,Texas. He returned to Richmond in 1986, where he worked for Schnabel Engineering and The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. He co-founded Miles Ahead Distribution in 1994, later becoming the sole owner.He used his knowledge and experience as a contractor with several engineering companies to become a certified soil scientist. His final place of employment was with FEMA as an environmental specialist.Kelvin grew up in the Church of God in Christ. Later in life, he joined St. Paul’s Baptist Church. During his time there, he was very involved in youth sports and always lent a hand when needed.Kelvin was a hard worker and was truly devoted to his family and friends. He was fun, loving, and easy going. He gave his time freely to everyone’s life he touched. Kelvin was a fatherfigure to so many people that he was commonly referred to as “Dad.” The kind of influence he had on others was a gift from God and will never be forgotten.His deep desire to motivate and empower others to strive for excellence in life was like no other. His wisdom and problem-solving capabilities were impeccable.If anyone was going through issues ranging from family problems to car trouble,he was the man to contact. He was always willing to share the knowledge he possessed to better a person’s well-being.Those who knew Kelvin were truly blessed to be in his presence.Kelvin leaves to cherish his memory, loving and devoted wife, Sylvia; two daughters, Alicia Hurdle-Woodson and Zenobia “Toni”; son,Lynwood;grandchildren,Amber Rollins,Kelvin Hurdle,André and Kenneth Reid; great-grandson, Jayden Jewell;sister,Gwendolyn Coles;god-children,Charles andMonique Collins and Carl and Cornelius Maddox;aunt,Leola Williams;uncle, Ulysses; mother-in-law,Zenobia Ford;father-in-law, Joseph Greene; sisters-in-law, Iola Washington,Sandra Harris and Sheila Brown;brothers-in-law, George and Walter Ford, William Harris and Louis Brown; son-in-law, David Woodson;two devoted friends,Monroe Ricks and Julia King Collins;a host of loving nieces,nephews,cousins, and innumerable memories to others which will always be in the hearts of his friends.
