Julia Barnes Dorsey

JULIA BARNES DORSEY, born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 31, 1923, quietly and peacefully departed from her earthly life with a quick puff at 10:00 p.m. on January 1, 2013, exactly one day after her eighty-ninth birthday. She actually passed away on her late mother’s birthday. Julia was the daughter of the late Estelle L. and John C. Barnes. Julia was the sister of the late Calvin Barnes, the late Clemenza Barnes Smith, the late Edna Barnes Cox and Leona Barnes Evans. Julia was brought up in Trinity A.M.E. Church where her early Christian education began as a member of the Cradle Roll Department and Sunday School. Education was in the Baltimore City Public School System. Julia graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in June of 1941. For forty plus years Julia was an active alumni member of the amazing graduation class. Julia briefly attended Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia. Illness caused her to leave Hampton Institute. Julia married and became mother to only one daughter, Parona. Later in life, Julia graduated from Cortez W. Peters Business School where she went on to join the teaching staff. It was at Peters where she pledged Chi Rho International Sorority. Other job careers included secretary to medical staff of Provident Hospital and legal secretary at Nelson Gosnell Law Firm from which she retired. Pleasure for Julia included sewing dresses, gowns and coats which she designed and sewed without the use of patterns. Julia loved to host luncheons for the staff of Roland Park Elementary School. She served as a Senior Chaperone for eighth grade Roland Park Middle School end-of-the-year field trips to Kings Dominion Amusement Park. Julia is survived by: her daughter, Parona J. Dorsey; granddaughters, Jai Lynn Dorsey (was a devoted caretaker) and Jill Lynette Dorsey; great-grandchildren, Tierra L. Beckwith, Taj L. Beckwith and Deshaun D. Brightful; sister, Leona Evans; nieces, Burma S. Crowell of Georgia, Carlotta C. Watkins, Cheryl and Renada; nephew, Gilbert; other mourners are: a faithful niece, United States Army Chaplin S. Handy and her husband, Quentin; and a host of other relatives and friends. Julia leaves a special loving and supportive extended family consisting of Joan Alexis and her mother, Valcuture Alexander, Sylvia I. Cothorne and family.
